Caught these two the other morning at a local pond. The Bass was 22 inches in length and the weight was just under six pounds. The Rio was 11 inches in length and the weight was a little over a pound and a half. Texas Pond fishing at it's best. fish

Side Note: Both fish were released to fight again. cheers

The ponds here in the San Antonio area are is good shape thanks to a very nice wet winter and spring. The fish are super active. I would like to see about 3 inches of more rain over the next month. Thanks for the reply. cheers

Those rios are pretty fish and remind me of a texas cichlid i have; i don't typically target pan fish, but i would like to catch one of those.

I wish I knew where some "ponds" in the south Fort Worth area were. Those are fun.

Rios aka Rio Grande Cichlids are not considered a native fish by Texas Parks&Wildlife. They are a very good eating fish and are easy to fillet. Fry em, grill em, or bake em. thumb

I've never caught or seen one in person. Are they plentiful or a rare catch?

Rio are very plentiful in South Texas. There is also a good population of em in the Hill Country and southeast Texas. They are a warm water fish and thrive in warm weather conditions. Areas where the winter is cold most of the time a Rio will not survive. They are a super fighting fish as well. duel
