Grainraiser Don't want you to get the wrong impression about the discussion either. I want everyone to stay interested in the sport. Just want it to be done right. This way we can continue to fish this way in the state of TX. Catching fish with a net is not noodling. Maybe those guys can get on here and learn how to do it the right way.

how would you noodle an old dam with tons of big rock and concrete? basically how do you decipher a bad hole from a good hole
fish to live and live to fish

Ok, an old dam can be good, there are a few things you need to know though. The water temp gets colder as you get deeper. If the water temp gets to cold the fish wont spawnn. The concrete on a damn usually runs into the ground several feet, if a fish can't get under it, they won't spawn there. The rock can be good as long as it is on soft bottom and not deep into the ground. A fish needs to get under the rock. I do find fish in holes made by the gap between car sized bolders with no soft bottom, however they are usually resting, not spawning. That means they will most always blow and not hold there ground as they do when spawning to protect the nest. Soft or loose bottom, even gravel is the key. If you can picture a rock or boat ramp on top of sand or gravel. The fish can get in a gap and start to fan a nest just like any other fish species. It basically makes a bowl with a hard top. the male usually leaves it open until he has found a female, then they both enter and start fanning. They wait for the water temp to get just right before she lays. She leaves very shortly there after and the male gaurds the nest. Also every one. It is very important that after pulling the fish in a hole to dig the entrance back out if you want to continue to fish the hole. This way another fish of the same size or even bigger can use it again. For instance, lets say at the begining of the spawn, there is a coffee can size hole on the edge of a piece of concrete. since blues spawn first, a 4 lb blue pair can get thru the hole to the nest. Lets say the hole is about the size of a 5 gal bucket to start. the pair spawn and the fanning moves 2 coffee cans of material out of the nest into the main water due to current produced by fanning. The fish spawn then leave. 24 hrs later another 8lb male comes along and moves enough material to get in. he fans 3 coffee cans out of the nest and makes it bigger again. You can see my point by now I hope. The bigger you make the entrance when done, the bigger the next fish can be. This will platue in the 40 lb range. If it doesn't silt badly over the next 8 to 9 months till the next noodling season, you may start next year with 20s in the hole instead of the 4lb pair. Then the platue may make it into the 50+ range, and then CALL ME!

Read back over your story and found something I missed before. When you get the fish out, and don't have a stringer. You can do one of two things. Either run your hand in the fishes mouth until you can come out of the gills and grab the gill plate from inside out. with the other hand pull the fish to your side and hug it. If its a stud, hug the body and wrap your legs around the tail. Let your buddies know this before hand as you will likely need one of them to hold your head above water so you can breath until you get to a stringer or the boat/bank. The other, which I like more because it doesn't tear my arms up as bad is to grip the bottom jaw tightly and reach in the gills until I have all the actual gills in my had in a fist. I can then control both thrust and roll. Either of these tricks should only be used on fish you plan to keep as the fish may not survive either. Its best to have 2 or even 3 stringers on you. I like a 5' to catch and string big fish while still in the hole. and 12' for transport stringers. also after you buy a stringer take a grinder and sharpen it, this will make stringing faster and easier. You will thank me when you are 6 seconds from passing out due to lack of gills. My team noodled our first catfish this weekend. I'll log my experience on here as well. We were brand new to the sport and only knew what I'd researched on the internet and saw on youtube. Hands only! was right on with the type of stuff to look for. Once we figured that out, there were fish under almost every big rock.
The first day, we noodled up and down about 8 miles of river and didn't find a single fish. I didn't really know what I was looking for, but just never found a hole that was "right." I don't think our rivers are good for noodling, not enough clay.
The second day, my team and I went to a reservoir and started looking around some large flat rocks with a muddy/clay bottom. The first hole we found was very shallow and went into a small clay bluff bank. I stuck the pole in the hole to see if anything was in it and I felt something bump the pole. Still not sure if what was biting the pole was a beaver, turtle, or fish I was a little timid to stick my hand in there. About the time I got the stones to do it, the fish shot out of the hole and hit me right in the nuts! Okay I saw it was a channel catfish about 5 lbs, so I knew what I was looking for. After the guys I'd banded together for our "noodling team" finished laughing at me, we moved on.
The next hole we found was under a big slab rock, I stuck the pole in there and felt a fish bite it and bite it Hard! I called the team over and we surrounded the rock feeling for exit holes. Once we had all of them blocked I crammed my hand under the rock up to my shoulder. I could feel the fishes tail, but couldn't ever get it to turn around and bite my hand. The hole was too small to get my leg in there. It finally bolted out of an exit hole, knocking one of my team on their butts. Looked like a flathead about 30 lbs. We were fired up! Two holes with fish about 30 yards apart.
The next hole we found was similar to the hole described above, a big flat slab of rock. This hole under the rock was more like a cavern though, and once we got everyone surrounding the hole, I stuck 3/4 of my etire body under the rock and moved my feet around. Once I cornered the fish, he bit my foot and had about half of my tennis shoe in his mouth. I slowly began to pull him towards my hand, but he let go. He tried to bolt out of the hole just like the other one did, but this time he tried going out of the hole I had blocked with my body. He wedged himself between me and the bottom and I grabbed him and yanked him out. It was about a 20 lb flathead, and my team was whooping and hollering but when I pulled him out of that hole he went nuts. I lost my grip after I pulled him out of the water because he was twisting so much. We forgot the stringer along with gloves about 40 yards away in the boat. We were bummed that our first fish was a decent sized flathead and we lost him because we were unprepared. Oh well, quick release and on to the next one.
The next fish we found was a small channel cat of about 4 lbs under a shallow flat rock. We secured this fish, I grabbed him (with gloves this time) by the gills and pulled him out. First one we actually caught!!! Small, but still exciting and we had one on the board.
We looked for more holes for about two hours after that with no success. The last bank we stopped at had a HUGE flat slab of rock. My team and I worked it over pretty good checking for holes on all sides of the rock. We had just about got finished checking it when my buddy hollered out "He just bit my stick and its a good one!" We worked this fish for a good 10-15 minutes, he was biting everything you stuck back in that hole. He bit my foot, he bit two different sticks, and finally he bit my buddies hand. You could hear the fish bite him underwater and all these air bubbles came up. He was down underwater for awhile and finally pulled up this huge 20-25 lb bluecat. We all jumped on him, not wanting him to get away like the flathead did.
Sorry for the long post, but this was some of the most exciting fishing I have ever done. My team and I are hooked.
Some things I would suggest bringing.
Tennis shoes, gloves (don't kid yourself, they will tear you up!), long, heavy duty stringer (tie a loop in the stringer, don't trust the ring on the end), camera.
A team of about three to four people is what we had and it worked well. One guy managed the boat and we took turns having three people surround holes and the other guy handling the boat.

Just so everyone knows a little more. Here are a few of the things I have noodled fish out of in the past. Keep in mind, in OK we can only keep flatheads, so thats what we hunt. I have caught fish out of boat ramps, house slabs, concrete cellers, train box cars, car bodys, an airplane, sunk boats upside down, rock, root balls, hollow logs, bank holes, beaver dens, brush piles, barrels, bathtubs, sattelite dishes, tractor tires, semi tires, culverts, bridge endbuttments, old highway both concrete and pavement, wooden boxes, old boatdock floats that have sunk to the bottom and silted in, and actually open water. You can see an open water catch on Lonestar outdoor news. I caught one in open water while fishing the tourny I put on there in may. Also we have a nice article in the LSON front page. My wife is pulling a 42 she caught in the tourny. Bad thing was, it wasn't big enough to make the cull. She did catch a 45 later that day that was her PB that did. I couldn't have been more proud of her. Guess I gotta give it to you boys down there though. You let that one get away, she's from fredricksburg TX. Glad you guys missed that one, shes the love of my life. And any of you big tough guys out there that think its too tough for you....she ways 110 lbs. Im assuming brushpiles are 2nd choice when rocks arent present ?

We're going to go check some new water this afternoon. I'm going to try and take my GoPro camera and get some video. Hopefully we find some holes. If its a good hole, i'll stick the camera in there and show you what one looks like underwater, if there's a fish in there it could get real interesting. We may not find any holes but we'll give it a shot. The creek we are going to has good visibility, and we've seen flats in there pushing 30 lbs.

Do not forget the dadgum stringer, gloves, sticks, shoes, a small shovel to dig the holes back out, Also when I'm checking new holes, I like to wear a long sleave shirt, like underarmer or equivelant. You never know what kind of sharp crud you will get into while fishing a new hole. Another tip. When you guys are done with a trip, make sure you clean all your abrasions at least once with alchohal. This will cut down on the # of infections you will run into thru a long noodling season. I also carry the alchohal ear dry in late season, something about the organisms in the warmer water starts to give all of us ear infections. I would suggest both if you keep at it as hard as you guys are. We're going to go check some new water this afternoon. I'm going to try and take my GoPro camera and get some video. No good tonight. We checked a medium sized creek behind my buddies house. Not really any good holes that we could find. Can't wait until this off limits is lifted this weekend for this bass tournament on my home lake. I found some good looking stuff on Google maps today. Yep... its going to be good this weekend. These were taken when the water was 4 foot lower than it is now.
