We recently moved to Texas from California. All I have ever done is lake fishing in Cali. I haven't gotten into fly fishing yet so I still need a bait and hook or lure method for the Guadalupe River for our camping trip. Any help is greatly appreciated....

Catfish, bass , or sunfish?

its all new to me in these parts so any tips/tricks are greatly appreciated.

in CA i primarily fished trout and cat.

Cats we use a minnow sain to get bait and trot lines. Set below good current. Have done pretty good with bass and sun fish on fly poppers. For cats on rod and reel try some cut bait in deep pools. We pulled two cats out by sisterdale a couple of weeks ago in the 20# range off trot lines. A throw net or minnow sain is a great investment for bait. Good luck and have fun.

Below Canyon Lake Dam just outside of New Braunfels is about the only year around rainbow trout fishery in Texas.

There you can catch trout on fly rod or spinning gear. The lake and the upper Guadalupe above the lake is good for bass, smallmouth, white bass, stripers in the lake, catfish, and sunfish, and regular bass tackle and ultra light gear or the norm to handle them.

Down below the tailrace of Canyon lake are several smaller lakes which are Dunlap, McQueeney, Placid, Meadows, and further south toward Gonzales is 4H and 5H lakes which all these above are known as the river lakes.

Thay all hold good populations of the native fish and sometimes there is a surprize if you hook into a stiper that got out of Canyon.

Calaveras and Braunig to the southeast of San Antonio has freshwater Redfish and a lot of easy to catch channel and blue catfish.

Choke Canyon about 70 miles to the south is one of the better bass lakes in the area.

When and where are you camping? I'm heading the Guadalupe river state park tomorrow morning, staying through Memorial day (can't wait!). A little bird told me that a Zoom green pumpkin speed craw on a jig head is the bait to use on the Guad....

The river thru kerrville is good for blue gill, warmouth, pumpkinseeds, shell crackers, guadalupe bass and large mouth bass. Caught all the before on night crawlers. Blue cats, flat heads and channels have all been caught on either night crawlers or crawfish type stink baits. The river in town has two small areas that serve as boat ramps and small parks, not much bank fishing there. Louis Hays park near the mall has more bank fishing and also more fisherman. Flat Rock Park has a good amount of bank fishing and some really nice fish have been taken outa there. Both Ingram lakes have a very small area for bank fishing and have some real good cats coming out there. Best fishing in the area is via boat in the upper river impoundments but you can only use rows or electric trollers in there. Gas motors can be used in old ingram lake and flat rock.

I use to do the kerrville state park alot.I rented the screen shelters on the river.Great times there.

No more Kerrville State Park. It now belongs to the city, or the county, but not a state park any more so jug lines and trotlines are legal to use.

That was a good explanation. Personally I would suggest Ingram Lake which is sort of north of Kerrville or Flat Rock lake, where the state park used to be, on the south part of Kerrville. Rent a kayak and you can go all over these small lakes.

What I would really suggest is to get you a kayak and put in at Flat Rock Lake and float down to Center Point which is a 2 hr float without stopping, 6 miles maybe, and plan as much time as you want for fishing along the way. It's an easy float and you will see lots of fish. 80% of the river will be wadeable so you can get out and wade and fish. There is a kayak rental in Kerrville. Kerrville Kayak and Canoe 130 W. Main 830.895.4348. You need some way to be picked up at the end though. I don't live too far from Flat Rock lake. I even have a kayak(Tarpon 120) you could use. PM me if you are interested.

The water in the G is moving pretty good and is stained from the last rains we had, bluegill were hitting on and off, cats were slow but bass in the 10 to 14 inch range were hitting crawlers, gar were hitting cut bait in old ingram but you had to run it right in front of them to get them to pay attention.
