My wife and I are also Dave Ramsey disciples. Cash and debt free, is the way to go.
A buddy of mine just bought a 18'6" Skeeter with a 175 and loves it! It'll go about 65-68, has plenty of storage, takes big water well and is very gas friendly.

well I would prefer used, and also selling a awesome used 96 Skeeter, so that I can purchase a 05 model from my brother to help him out

Used.....why take the hit. Warranty is all that matters if buying used. Just my opinion. Trying to get my posts up on here

I bought my boat brand new 8 years ago. My theory at the time was, every time I go to the boat I wanted to have zero problems. I want it to start every single time and I want to have fun with it, not frustrations.

That worked perfectly until a year or two ago when I started having minor issues that are typical at that age.....new alternator, water pump, etc.

I financed it, , but made it where I couldn't get upside down and the boat I bought doesn't have a big pull it out of the showroom price drop.

That was then - would I do it again? Maybe. But if you can pay cash- do that.

Lots of good advice so far on here. Just thought I would throw it out there.

man, I can only wet dream about the kind of boat I could get my hands on for 25 grand...

Just me, but I would totally go used... You have more options. You could take that money, buy a hull that does exactly what you want and deck it out with the holders, trolling motor, fish finder, WHATEVER!

If you are willing to do a bit of your own handiwork, you could get a hell of a rig for 15k and keep 10k in your pocket... Just remember, spending MORE on a boat isnt going to put more fish in your well.

i dont fish for bass, Im a cat guy... I currently have a 1983 boat and motor and frankly I don't want a new hull... I cant find a new boat that is as capable as what I have now. new is not all it is cracked up to be.

I would buy this new $11k motor
http://www.boats.net/outboard_motor/Yamaha/175HP/parts.html
or this one
http://www.proboats.com/new_vehicle_deta...;ModelYear=2013

and then put it on a 8 K hull and have a bigger boat with a warranty on the engine.

or buy

There is a lot of great advice on here. I have been going back and forth with the same question, but with the big depreciation hit acquired in the first couple of years on a new one, it seems the most fiscally responsible choice for me would be used.

If you spend 99% of your saving to buy a boat just so you can say you paid cash is crazy. In other words if you have $50K in the bank go for it. If you only have $26K just put a big down payment like $10-$15K and pay-off the rest. If something happens you can always pay it off later. I sleep better at night knowing I have money in the bank, not because I have no payments. Of course this is pending your able to get a loan in the first place.

My hypothetical goes like this. I am saving about 25 grand for a bass boat. I want to buy the boat straight-up, no loans, no haggles, no bulsh, just pay cash!

Now question is, do you take the 25 grand and buy the smaller but new 18.5 footer or do you go with a used later model hopefully no older than a 2007 boat thats longer and has more HP and potentially rigged right? if you can find one???

Would want to fish it in weekend team tournaments.

Please I know that their are probably a million factors, but help me keep this simple! I understand the variables, whats being offered with the used boat, hours on motor, amount of care taken with boat, warranty, if its your moms uncles, etc..Just lets say you found a used boat you like, but you could buy a shorter brand new boat and like the idea of warranty, and reliability, just hate the idea of 18.5 length boat?

What say you

Oh and if the idea of taking the 25+ grand and buying a boat outright is stupid to do, please let me know! Cause to me I'd rather just buy the boat outright then get into a loan! Id rather pay myself before paying "the man"! Plus I figure I could just build from there, save for the potential upgrade while fishing?

I'd go with a bigger used boat myself. It's not hard to find one that is 2 or 3 years old that has been well taken care of, and get it for at least 30% less than what the original owner paid.

Buy a used boat for $19,000 after TTL. Put the other 6k in the bank, you will need it...! Save it for the new powerhead, lower unit, carpet, seats, tires, brakes, batteries, etc...

Boat stands for Bring.On.Another.Thousand...

Yep and I heard the happiest days of a boat owners life are the day he buys the boat and the day he sells the boat!

I went new (again) b/c i know it is going to start, the pumps work, it hasn't been worked on, so on and so on. You don't need any problems on the water, it's just peace of mind. With past experience, i bought the same brand, just bigger and more horses. I did look at used ones but who knows how it was treated and how many times it has been in for work, if any. You just never know but i feel better going new. I paid $23.000 out the door.

Guess what you only live once and you cant use your money in heaven. So buy a new boat- spend what ever you want on it- that you can afford and be happy. We just bought a brand new manitou pontoon- best boat I have ever been on. Expensive but we are on it every weekend.

I bought used, its paid for! I could not be more pleased with mine.
20' Center Console. If I bought new it would be a Blue Wave or my 1st choice a Falcon it they still made them. I just don't want payments anymore. A Falcon would temp me!

If you want to pay yourself first, don't buy a boat lol.
