Just FYI for the forum, I recently asked Lowrance about the launch angle for the LSS-1 structure scan transducer. I received the following response:

The angle size of the Down Scan Signal is listed below.

Measured FORE to AFT X PORT to STARBOARD
800 KHZ: 1.58 deg x 31.75 deg
455 KHZ: 2.79 deg x 55.82 deg
--------------------------------------------------------------
This is really good info. Shows why the HDS SI works so good at deeper depths and shallow ok but not so much. If you plot it on graph paper say your in 20 ft of water. with a 32 deg side angle your shooting right at 10ft to either side of the boat. No way your looking under a dock unless your right up next to it. Thats assuming the SI works only at 800 Khz. if it works at 455 then your looking slightly more to the side, say maybe 13ft or so in 20 ft of water. deeper the better.. seems that way to me anyway. Interesting. CD

Great looking screen shots captdale. Are you overlaying your 2d onto your downscan to get the fish symbols? The overlay is something I havnt played with any yet.

Need to CHANGE horses here for a minute. Want to talk about the DSI Units:

Lowrance Units have 480X480 PIXELS
Vs
HB Units have 640X640 PIXELS

What is the difference of these PIX going to be ? ? ?

I have Lowrance HDS-10 w/SS-1 & HDS-7 Units on my boat due to having better images. Will this PIXEL difference cause the HB to have a little more crisp PIC's than Lowrance in these DSI Units.

My dad and brother were at the coast fishing this weekend and said the second day they went out the structure scan was saying no source. He said they checked the connections and fuses and they were both good. Anyone know what else could be causing this? I havnt had a chance to check anything out but were planing on going out today after work so hopefully I can figure something out then.

Its been working fine in the past and getting used often and we never unhook the ethernet cord from the lss. I guess to test this I just need to move the ethernet cord its on now to another plug and see what it does? Cant I also hook it up to my ethernet cord for my hds 5 up front and see if it works then? If so I know the cord going to the console is bad. Right?

hi big10- I really don't know. I just messed with it till I got what you see. I'll go to the seminar on 14 july and try to learn what does what. I'm still not satisfied with the SI so will take out a metal mesh deck chair this evening and drop it in 20 ft with a marker float and see if I can get it dialed in better. That way i'll know what i'm looking at anyway. I'll post pics of that exercise.

The way i figure is that 800 khz is about 2ft wavelength, 1 ft 1/2 wave and about 6" at 1/4 wave so i wouldn't expect much resolution on stuff smaller than about 6". Might just be on the wrong track however. We will see.

BTW, it was the batteries. Good batts, work good last long time CD

Well, about what I expected. If you know its there you can find it. Hard to do and pushing the limits I suspect. Maybe not if I can get it dialed in better. Time will tell.

Hey Cream, I have heard nothing but bad stuff regarding the Lowrance DSI units, not sure if the birds are any better.

I can't post another pic from my phone but have you guys ever seen the divers split up on both sides of the motor? With my step I have I don't know that I can mount them both on one side. I can email a better pic to anyone willing to give me some advice

Thanks

Hi Jason - Can I connect this external GPS antenna from my old Lowrance Globalmap 2000 to my HDS-8? I have the HDS-8 in my center console (skeeter SK2000) and it takes forever to lock on. The 2000 locked on in like 90 seconds. CD
