I'm using a Humminbird 570 and I like it. I got it on sale for $150. A lot of retailers will have all different models powered up in demo mode so you can check out the features and decide which one fits you best. Good luck.

Check this one out!! My wife got me this one for xmas and got to tell you, it works pretty well. I got it out this past weekend and I was pretty impressed. It comes it a protective case and it is portable which I really like. I carry my yak in the roof of my car and being able to remove the finder quickly is a plus. http://www.amazon.com/Humminbird-Piranha...9163&sr=8-3Good luck.

You'll need a decent battery. Nothing fancy a deer feeder type will work. Look for something that is rated between 6-8 amp hours I would say. Also you'll need to figure out how to mount your transducer and head unit. For the transducer you can mount inside the hull or outside. Outside gives you better water temp readings but could get knocked around in shallow water or during transport. Mad frog makes a nice arm that you can attach to a piece of gear trac. Inside the hull is a good option. You can buy an install kit or make your own. Lots of good YouTube videos will show you how. For the head unit I like the RAM mounts. You can easily mount it just about anywhere and they fit most units. Call before you buy and tell then the model FF you have and they can match it to the right mount. If you're going to the paddlesports show this Saturday come see me and I can show you how mine is rigged. I'll be at the APT booth. Good luck.

I forgot to mention if you go with DI or SI you'll need to mount the transducer in the water for the best readings.

This might be the weirdest, most pointless post ever. I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering fishing

I went with the Mark 4 DSI which is greyscale DSI and has the GPS in it. It is only available at Cabela's and it is $219.00 online but they had it at the store for $199.00 on Sunday. BigDozer66

LOWRANCE dsi HAS DOWNSCAN ONLY AND NO traditional 2d sonar. wondering how well the lowrance downscan shows fish. on my humminbird 370 di the downscan doesnt show fish too good (little rice dots at best) but the 2d sonar switchfire does.
yup if ye aint been skunked, ye aint been fishing! <<al einstene IAMCOUNTRY texas made lures. getcha some

I have the Mark 4 DSI, works great for structure, not that great for fish identification. For $199, you can't beat the down scan image, GPS, and temperature combo. I see no value in the color Elite version.
For fish identification sonar is the ticket. The DSI will show bigger fish or a group of fish as a speck or two but there is no better fish image than the sonar's boomerang. The only problem is you can't get that in one box without spending at least $650. Hummingbird 597 ci HD di is the best value for GPS, temperature, Sonar, and Down scan. In the Lowrance line which it the best in class will cost you over $1200 upwards to $2500.
