Small children mostly.
Anything that is easy and fits down their throat. They don't feed heavily once they hit this size, the bigger they get the slower they grow. From what studies I have read and conversations I have had with biologists its mainly gizzard shad, catfish, whitebass, drum, and smaller sunfish. They are opportunistic and will take whatever is easiest really, although I think they prefer fresh dead/injured over carrion. They are not a threat to fish populations such as bass, crappie, etc. Because for the most part they do not inhabit the same parts of the water bodies where they are found. These river fish are mainly eating gizzard shad, drum, carp, buffalo, suckers, and catfish.

I have done a tagging study since 2007 , they will grow from 5 to 12 lbs a year even the big fish , they will live to be up to 80 yrs od , and will eat anything that is in the water with them , including snakes , turtles etc. prefered prey is any fish that gets in the way , and they are very very fast , they prefer live or very fresh dead fish not anything that is old or stinky , and that comes from catching them everyday for lots of years

I have never had much luck with old stinky stuff, only got one good fish off it since I got serious about fishing for them. I guess I was thinking more in terms of length than weight on the growth rate, at an average of 2" of length a year you get a fish of 60 years being 10' long, which seems to be reported as getting toward the maximum size. I suppose those numbers for weight could be accurate when conditions are favorable.

It has nothing to do with how many inches they will grow in a year in lenght , it is girth that makes the difference , and they are not going to be 10 ft long they will mostly be in the 92 to 96 " range when they get really big , BUT they can be up to 54 " girth the biggest I have caught , I have caught 6 over 300 lbs since I have been fishing for gar

How do yall calculate your weight estimates? From there length/width? Had trouble finding an accurate calculator for alligator gar.

Skeeter, hi I have caught and weighed thousands of gar most with a certified IGFA digital scale , and you take LXGXG divide by 800 then plus 15 lbs that will be really close , most times just a little under the true weight ,Kirk

Alright, got some pictures from Sunday and Monday Fished Sunday with a personal friend. Could not have asked for better activity out of the Alligator Gar, this will seem exaggerated but I promise it is not: We landed 15 alligator gar besides a couple blue cats. Around 30 runs total. 4 Alligator gar over 5' long, and the rest ranging from the high 3's up to just under 5'. Lost one over 6' at the bank. Monday I fished with clients Manoj and Rodger, two really nice guys. Had a great time fishing with them. Despite the fish acting different than the day before we still landed 6 fish with the biggest being this fish of 80#'s or so, 5'7" long. I still have some dates for May if anyone wants to go before the weather gets really hot. Have dates in June and July as well, thanks for looking and good fishing to all!

They scarf up bass by the thousands every day in Texas.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

They scarf up bass by the thousands every day in Texas. Gar stomach content surveys show their main diet is carp, buffalo, and shad. Not many bass found... Of course, I'm going from memory; I'm sure if a google search is done you might find these facts as well...

Didn't go to well with the Camera, guys. Got 2 bites on Monday all day, moved several times used the freshest bait possible(alive when cut), different kinds of bait, etc. Over night got 2 more bites, one a small 3' class fish that threw the bait and had a disappointment with a 5.5-6' class fish lost at the bank. No further bites despite putting out fresh baits. We were supposed to fish and film Tuesday as well but we were forced to call it quits on account of thunderstorms in the area. Will be meeting back up with the camera next month to work on getting some good stuff. Thanks for all you all's support and good fishing to everyone.

5 Today biggest around 60#'s. Fish were really aggressive today, just didn't have much luck mouth hooking. Put out some godzilla baits and couldn't beat the small fish off them. Got a 4' class fish on a 2# bait....

I offer full day guided alligator gar fishing trips. I usually fish on the Trinity River. All day from my perspective means safe light until about an hour and a half before dark. An average day will produce between 5 and 10 runs with 3 or 4 fish landed and a legitimate chance of landing a trophy fish over 6 feet. I can not guarantee a fish but no effort will be spared in making the trip successful. I provide everything needed for the day including water, sports drinks, and bait/tackle. I run catch and release trips only. If a replica is desired measurements and photos can be taken for this purpose. I book trips now through mid October. I can accommodate up to three anglers per day, but I think it is best suited for 2. My daily rate for 1-3 anglers is $550. For more information please visit my website at www.texasmegafishadventures.com clearly stated in the first post.
I thank God for each day!
