As the old saying goes, the only time a boat owner will be happier is when he sells it.....

BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand

To add to Jpost's list.

A boat is all about the motor. Take the time to price a replacement motor for your boat so you understand just how expensive they are. Keep your foot out of it, leave your ego at the dock when you bring your fish in not on the lake.

Take exceptional care of your big motor.

Charge your batteries as soon after use as you can. Invest in a Desulfator like BatteryMinder, and hydrometer learn to use them properly. Store your batteries disconnected, in a warm place at full charge and top them off at least once a month.

Make it habit, to once a year pull your trailer axle hubs, replace worn bearings, and repack if not replacing. Fishing is no fun if you don't make it to the lake, and are sitting along side the road.

Seek advice when buying anything for your boat, or gear for that matter. Never be in a hurry on these purchases.

If you store your boat, learn your motors procedure for storage. Never leave gas in your tanks, fuel lines or motor for more than a few months with out a fuel stabilizer in it and if its going to be longer, remove the fuel altogether and run the engine till all fuel is consumed in the lines and it stops. Dry is better that gummy.

Insurance. Nuff said.

Trim up in the shallows. A new lower unit is the second most costly repair boat owners will have to endure.

good luck,
