I've been reading the replies to the post about Length Limits, and I have a slightly differnt question:

Many stated that they sort of cull their keepers around 12", which is what I do when I have plenty in the freezer. If my freezer is empty, I'll keep all those smaller legal fish. However...If I catch a fish around 2.5-2.7 lbs, I ease her back in the lake and hope to catch her when she tops 3 lbs. Also, because I don't think the bigger fish taste as good.

My question is how many of you actually throw back your biggest fish?

Unless its a tourney, everything much above 1 pound goes back unless whoever I'm fishing with really needs crappie. Even then, I ask everything above 1.5 returns..smaller ones are tastier and easier to clean. With that said, on the lakes I fish 1.5 is a large fish and could win big fish in a given tourney.

I tossed a 1 and 3/4 yesterday. Sometimes I'll keep em that big. But when they have eggs it's hard to know she won't be laying them if I don't release lol. But just depends. But your right the 11-13 inches are the best fillets.

Anything under 11" and over 13" I release and ladies of any size that look like they have eggs, just in case they might still lay if released.

But, that is just me, it's your fish to do with as you wish.

I caught a 16" and a nearly 15" this spring and released both. Just can't stand the thought of keeping something that has grown to those sizes and hope to catch them again in a few years. I like the idea of only keeping the 11 - 13" fish from now on.

Like I said on the other Size Limit Post. We don't keep anything under 1# or over 2#'s. Unless we are having a big fish fry, and need the fish, which almost NEVER happens.

The 3 lakes I fish has a abundance of fish between 1# & 2#'s.

Sometimes I keep all of them, and sometimes I release all of them... Depends on if I have a stringer, and if I have time to clean them!!!

+1. The bigger fish are probably near end of life cycle anyway ( 15+ " fish).

i agree, and a 2+ lber has already spawned several times, so the good genes are passed on.

I prefer the 11 to 13 inch fish for eaters.

Keep on fishing.

Guess it really gets down to how much you fish, and how many fish you catch. Fewer trips, and fewer fish would warrant keeping everything.

I'm lucky enough to get to fish at least every other weekend. Take PICS of the big fish, and toss them back. I keep two messes of fish in the freezer. Insures fresh fish at every fish fry. We have fish a couple times per month. The benefits of being retired. cheers

Toss back any close to 2, especially during spawn.
