OK....here's how you do it. Get you a float tube, or some kinda device to float you over to the other side. The water is deepest straight in a line with the creek of course. Once you are over to the other side you should be able to step out of your tube, or yak or whatever and wade fish under the railroad trestle. ( depends on how many gates are open of course as to how doable this is.) You'll want to use a long flexible 11 or 12 foot rod like the ones listed above by T3. Cast as far as you can towards the dam using lure of choice. From here you don't have much of a crowd at all...just you, a few Vietnamese guys who are kick-butt good fishermen, and dang nice fellas. And of course the guy with the beard in the float tube......he's always there it seems. Can you still put in by the parking lot? I heard they were changing that. Be great if they didn't.

so, when they are running the water, what's the setup for hybrids? Can't use 4oz float as it will drift away. fish the bottom?

Yes i still have some, about 680 floats, 2oz are about 30% smaller than 4oz floats. I also have 2.75in 1oz float perfect for 7' to 9' rod. Pm if you need some.

heading to Lavon Dam thursday after work with my 8 year old grandson. He is hoping for some sandbass, I am hoping for something larger than that We plan on stopping to get some large minnows and probably some small minnows as well. Any rigging tips for either of us? Not looking for specific spot, but I would assume fishing from the rocks is a good place to fish from. I will be honest with you, I am not much of a fisherman, love to fish, but just don't seem to catch much. It would mean a lot to get him on some fish. Thanks in advance for the help Steve

surf rods + 2oz casting float + lures. Don't worry about specific spot. Lot of catfishing folks are coming down, with at least 4-5 rods each casted out in all directions. It would be hard to get to a spot casting out without hearing someone yelling " hey, there is my line" from his beach chair. This whole dam thing is over on my end.

Steve, I personally would not take a 8 year old kid there.. It's just don't seem kid friendly fishing place to me... you can go downstream, but it sounds like you might need a wader to get there now with all the flood... I am not sure what the condition is like now... you can check out the place and see what's it like... if too many people fishing and current running strong... i would rather take him to 78 cove by the bridge before Little Ridge Park for crappie fishing.. Just my 2cents. sometimes, it's a dog fight down there like 12bang3 pointed out. Just not worth to take 8 years old no matter how good fishing is down there..
