Have I? No. Would I? Can't answer that. I do know that they can't sustain a return policy like this forever. Not even walmart could. But for now, it's the main reason I shop there for 60-70% of my junk.

I think you guys are jumping the gun a little here. Here's the deal guys, as of now Academy offers a phenomenal and in most circumstances no questions asked return policy. To think that academy, or any other store for that matter eats the cost on returned items is ludacrist. With the buying power that the outdoor giants have they are able to get credit on "warranty" items. Take it easy on the guy if you don't know the whole story.

My buddy broke a rode by slamming the trolling motor on top of it one day. On the way home we went in to Academy looking to get a replacement rod for it. Keep in mind we left the broken rod in the boat. We were both new to fishing and weren't sure what would be a good replacement so we started explaining to the sales guy what happened. 100% our fault. He asked if we had the rod and told us just to bring it in and they'd swap it out. We told the guy that we didn't have the receipt with us at the time and he said "no problem just bring the rod in."

Well the whole story is pretty clear to me. The op admitted what he did and wants to know if the rod will work for his application. The rod will probably work. I don't think Academy is doing this out of the goodness of their heart. It's computed into their business model. It comes out in overall pricing because it has to.

Not necessarily Academy's pricing, but their supplier's. We had a local rod maker come to our club tournament meeting one night. He said he'd never be able to get his rods in a big box store like Gander Mtn or Academy because they set the terms of how they do business. At the end of the year, Academy can send 1200 rods back to the vendor and require a credit from them. Seems like a bad deal for the vendor, but those big box stores move a ton of merchandise. Cost of doing business. In the end, the consumer is footing the bill for the supply chain. So, it doesn't really matter I guess.

Your response is spot on I think except for one thing. It does matter in the sense that it cost someone. There's no free lunch.

I have had rods break too. Recently the blank started turning inside the handle (go figure). Academy replaced it, no questions asked.
Considering I spend a bundle on fishing tackle, I expect it to last practically forever (and I take good care of my gear).
BPS has an In Store replacement if you pay $18 bucks when you buy it. When you pay $600 for a rod, it's worth it. My son loves Abu Garcia rods and buys the best... Me? I buy the rod I need no matter what it costs.
As far as taking HIS rod in and getting a new one? Well, hmmmmmmm...
I'd use a C/R rod for C/R and get a flipping stick with lots of backbone to yank the GIRLS UP out of the stumps!
