You were not accused of doing anything wrong. If the merchandise is stolen the cops certainly aren't going to find it at the pawn shop. You have no way of knowing if the stuff is stolen or not and now the stuff belongs to the pawn shop and they have it for sale at a great price, so you make the purchase. Most people just don't pass up great deals if you have the cash for it. If they were stolen the owner wasn't going to get them back unless he went into the pawn shop and bought them back also unless he has some way of specifically identifying the equipment as his.

If someone pawned his tackle instead of selling it, he is totally stupid and should stay off the water anyways. Can you imagine how he would be trying to load and unload his boat on the ramp?

Probably happens more than you think ... heck ... he didn't pay for it in the first place, Mom and Dad did ... the "low beer light" is on so he doesn't have time to sell it for "market price" ... he gets what he can and its all profit.

Keep telling yourself that when you are buying stolen goods.

Haven't been in a pawn shop in years, but have been to college and seen guys do this very thing. Trust me ... there are times when nothing is off the table ... only limited by if the pawn shop would loan on it or buy it. Maybe college students today are smarter (or have parents fronting them more money), but I doubt it (at least the smarter part).

College is designed to educate, it won't make you smarter ... and there is a big difference between the two.

College students are just as dumb as they always were. I was one 7 or 8 years ago so I can confirm from personal experience. And to be clear, I know some men in their 30s and 40s who would pawn their fishing gear for whatever they needed cash for at the moment. It's not like pawn shops only survive in college towns. There's almost nothing you couldn't get more for by selling it than pawning it (thieves included). So if people always did the sensible thing, pawn shops wouldn't exist. The shelves are always full of stuff when I go in though.

Leave the kid alone. He got a great deal. Any of us would've done the same thing. If you wouldn't, that just makes you dumb for passing up a good deal. On the off chance they were stolen, the original owner was never going to get them back. If they weren't stolen, then you just passed up a good deal for nothing.
