This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this forum.

In the end, some broke college kid pawned it needing some money for beer money so he pawns his rod & reel.

If a college kid sells his caras and curados for less than 50 bucks then hopefully he is not getting a business degree...

Probably happens more than you think ... heck ... he didn't pay for it in the first place, Mom and Dad did ... the "low beer light" is on so he doesn't have time to sell it for "market price" ... he gets what he can and its all profit.

More likely is someone who spends more than they can afford on things like fishing gear and lives "paycheck to almost next paycheck" ... at the end of the month he's behind on the bills and has to raise some cash quick. He might could have found a way to get closer to "market value" for the merchendise, but a lot of us tend to forget that even today, not everyone is "internet savvy".

what stinks is you can get a real good deal on something that turns out to be stolen later. Then youve got a mess because the victim of the theft still has an interest in the property you just purchased legally which means you have an interest in the property as well as the pawn shop having an interest in it. Thats why they have property hearing in front of a judge. The original victim hardly ever loses his property no matter who bought it... hasn't been my experience yet anyways. The pawn shop turns out being the loser in the end.

This of course is only if the property can be identified... rods n reels...not real easy to do. Congrats on the good find bud!!!

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better...Great find and not judging...if you didn't buy it, the next one would. Just sad that it is likely hot....Otherwise, they would sell it here for quite a bit more.

You assume everyone that fishes in Texas knows about the TFF

Keep telling yourself that when you are buying stolen goods.

So he was supposed to walk in, notice it was a good deal, then walk about because it "might" be stolen. The next guy walks in and thinks the same and doesn't buy it because it "might" be stolen. Third guy walks in and doesn't buy because it "might" be stolen. In the end, some broke college kid pawned it needing some money for beer money so he pawns his rod & reel. Now the pawn shop is out of business because everyone thinks all their stuff "might" be stolen.

Scenario 2
He walked out because it "might" be stolen and as he's walking out he holds the door open for the next customer (because he's a good guy, remember?). Then that customers walks over and buys the rod & reel. He misses out a good deal because it "might" be stolen.

These scenarios both FAIL!!!

Congrats on a great find. I have had some good finds in pawn shops. First GPS was marked 300 on the tag. I said "woah let's put that back". He is like you know I saw one of these in Walmart for $70. I will sell this one to you for 70. Sometimes they don't know what they have... Many times they are trying to sell it for more than new. I think they have to wait 60 or 90 days to allow people and Leo to find stolen items.

Not your job or worry. Buying it off CL in some dark parking lot would be a little more off.

Nice find. Enjoy!

Scott

It blows me away that some of the same people crying "stolen" are also sending me pm's offering to buy them from me. I never imagined that I would meet the firing squad when I told everyone about my good find. Yeah, the sad truth is that my gear may be stolen but I guarantee not a single person here would pass that deal up. Obviously I hit on a sore subject for some of you but all these hypocritical remarks are a tad bit ridiculous. The TFF was made for guys who love fishing and everything about it, not to lynch some broke college kid who finally came across some great gear. I feel for horrible for everyone that's met the misfortune of a thief, but stolen or not, I'm still going to enjoy my new rods and reels. Now, can we get back to talking about fishing??

I could steal your rod and reels, take them back to a retail store and get money or store credit for them. They see nothing wrong and put them back on the shelf/clearance rack for the next guy to buy and there is really not much difference other than he got a great deal on them.

Great find!
