Are there more than one kind? I know people talk about Threadfins and Gizzards. Does a Gizzard just mean a big freakin shad size wise?

I have been able to net shad, but they are all around 3 to 4 inches. Used em in every method possible (live, whole, heads, chunks, etc). and it didnt matter. Fish wouldnt touch em. I had one perch and used that same perch head all day long and it got bit 100% of the time.

Thoughts??

Threadfin

Gizzard

Their mouths are a little diff the upper jaw sticks out further on the gizzard shad where the threadfin shad it does not. Threadfins get to 6 inches maybe a little more, but gizzards get much larger.

Soemtimes they just want a diff bait

try descaling the shad, or you can cut the tail off to make it bleed more.

The topic should read HOW DOES THAT GUY CATCH THOSE BIG SHAD???
I put Anise oil on my thread fin shad and caught a big one....

I catch some big shad and some little shad at the same time. I catch them better at night. I hold a spot light on the water for a little bit then throw the net right there.

Threadfins and gizzards both have the filament towards the back of the dorsal fin. There are some color differences as well as the mouth difference that has already been mentioned. Gizzards have a hump to the back when looked at side by side with threadfins. Threadfins usually have a yellow tint to the fins and they also have a yellow tint on the sides where as the gizzard shad are limited to blue sliver and purple. Also, gizzard shad will keep much better in a bait tank than threadfins.
