I dont normally chase the birds. But if I see a Heron diving in open water. I don't care what other birds are around. This bird will not lie. I call all the other birds liar birds. Sometimes they are on fish sometimes they are not. You wont see a Heron waste his energy trying to dive in open water if its not a easy meal.

We only see Loons in the winter/early spring, I will fish near them when I see them.

The other one I watch for is the Osprey as they will be usually be around a school of larger Sandies.

Don,

I dont always do this, just in certain circumstances. When they figure what i did, i usually get to see a different species of "bird" grin

As JD would say "Are we fishing for birds or fish?" Loons are good sometimes, gulls in tight groups usually point the way, unless there are water turkeys under them, or even loons. Those gulls are simply trying to steal shad away from turkeys and loons that dive way down into bait balls. If I see a heron hover over the water, it's full throttle to that spot. Birds aren't always the answer, but after a while, you'll learn when to fish under birds and when to just keep driving.

Common inshore trick - down there they use Fritos - it makes the perfect slick.

if u see birds searching an area, but no fish there, come back and check it later, because they may show up. the birds are there for a reason.
If you see alot of baitballs in a area, mark it on sonar, and come back later, because the fish will likely find then sometime throut the day.
If u see the little birds that build the tiny mud houses under bridges, fish the pilings and brushpiles near there house, because when they poop in the water, it attracts baitfish, and gamefish.
If u see where the cormorants roost, and the trees or over water, there will be catfish in the area, catfish love cormorant poop.
Gulls will rotate scouts out to scan areas. like missions, they take turns. then rest. then another one goes out, and so on.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !
