I remember buying a XLT Abu...Very dissapointed Here is a pic of a 1980's and 1990's "Low Profile"(Not Really) Abu...Not very low pro tho. I had a red 1000(Silver Reel, My first Baitcaster) similar to the pic and a xlt similar to this ..No where near as smooth as some of the Shimanos back in the day..Wish I still had the 1000...

I have 7 abu 521 that are supper tuned with abec 5 bearings. I added and extra ball bearing and they will out cast my shimano 200b-sf. They are built like tanks a stock 521 will not spin up or cast as far as a 200b-sf. A 521 is one of the best flipping and pitchin reels with a quick change spool. I love the parts avaiblity compaired to other reel most brands 5 years.
One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

I'm hooked on the 1970"s Ambassadeur 4500C and 2500C--both small and somewhat low profile. Probably got 15 4500C's and five 2500C's. Love 'em!

Abu Garcia just had a bunch of misses in the late 80s-2007 when the Revo came out.
(if you exclude Daiwa, which most in Texas do for some reason) Shimano was the only company producing low profile reels from the time the Curado B was introduced until about 2007 that fisherman actually liked and trusted. The Curado B, Chronarch A and then the super free version were loved for YEARS.
If you wanted a high performance reel that lasted, there just wasn't a choice. The Abu's from the 50's-late 70's and to a smaller degree the Lews reels were like that. But from the mid 90's-2006 the Curado B was THE reel.
Can you even imagine a low profile reel being in production for I think it was 16 years now?
Much like G Loomis though, the company probably milked it's bread and butter so long that loyal customers are ticked that something new got introduced, while the rest of the market watched as other companies slowly chipped away at the empire.
Shimano still makes EXCELLENT reels, but they haven't maintained the superiority (to the point where they are beyond a shadow of a doubt better) they had in the late 90's. Honestly right now I think Daiwa makes better reels in their upper end and Abu Garcia, Quantum and other pure fishing products are totally serviceable and offer features at better prices than some shimano products.
Sure shimano's probably last the longest, but there's more knowledge about what's out there than there has ever been, and more consumers cycle what they use faster on whole than they did in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Therefore, pure dependability, servicing, and durability are not as big of a concern as in years past.

Older Reels- when I first discovered Chronarch 50mg's and the bigger DHSV's I got on E-Bay and spent a bunch of money but came out with 9 50mg's and 3 DHSV's. I have an ex shimano tech and I send them to him about annually to be cleaned and repaired as needed.

I have an Abu Garcia Torno. One of a few true low profile Abu attempts. I remember seeing a few of the Abu pros using them before the introduction of the Revos. For a long time it was the only reel I had that wasn't a Bantam Curado(CU-200B or B5). It was always a backup as the performance was just not there. It wasn't nearly as smooth, didn't cast nearly as far, and the drag was very jumpy. I still have it, and it still works, but it was nowhere near on par with the Revos.
Some folks say that fishin on a Sunday is a sin, but if a fish bites my line, you know I'm gonna reel him on in!

I have 14 Abu Garcia Black Max reels they are anything from 1600 to 6600. One of my 6600's I saved up mowing lawns when I was about 15 to buy. I am 37 now and it work like it did the day I bought it. I think I payed about $125 for it. In my opinion they are about as good as my older Shimano's. They all run smooth.

I still use a old ABU 5500C as my jig reel. They are tanks and it works great for flipping or pitching jigs.

I'd just like it noted that my post was referencing the Abu low profile reels, as (as your post points out) they still produced a number of excellent round reels. The Black Max was the poor man's Morrum (fantastic reels).

Yeah, and sorry, didn't mean to come off as being defensive towards you.
I was just agreeing that they still made some AWESOME reels during the time period.
The black maxes and morrum were awesome. Basically any reel they make with a 1600/3600 designation were great for bass fishing.
Too bad a lot of the really nice round reels they've made since never made it over to America.

That what was said about the 4500's. I have 13 of 'em the regular 4500's and the 4500cb, most if not all of 'em are at least 25 yrs old or older cause i've had them that long. A little heavy, but man they last like the bunnie. They keep going and going!
