Good article. In the second paragraph from the top it states " a battery does not make electricity, it stores it". A battery is a manufacturing plant, the electricity is produced by chemical reaction inside the battery, when discharged, recharging regenerates the chemicals. If you don't believe this, next time you buy a lead acid battery that is dry (acid has not been added) put the required amount of acid in and check the battery for voltage. b

Very good information, but I still dont know what brand of deep cycle batteries I should buy for my bass boat. I know two guides who each swear by two different brands... I guess it just comes down to personal preference (or who your sponsor is). Anyone have any suggestions?

Here's another link that may be useful: http://www.mmbalmainauto.com.au/PDF/State_of_charge_12_volt_batteries.pdf

Many questions and much erroneous information around about battery voltage versus state of charge. This table shows the real facts.

Note that when using voltage as an indicator of battery state of charge, there must be no load on the battery and it must be allowed to stabilize for a couple of hours after the charging voltage has been removed.

Ran across this after seeing these batteries at a trade show floating in an aquarium....Thought this was neat, even though they are still pretty expensive.
I went further into the website and looked @ their 12 volt line and from what I read if you had a 12 volt trolling motor set up you could cut back to one battery to operate the trolling motor, cranking of the big motor, and running electronics and still out perform 2 separate lead acid batteries by a huge margin. Weight savings would be big and would probably translate into a pretty descent fuel savings if you spend a lot of time on the water.......

Some good reads guys. I have always been told to never charge a lead deep cycle battery because of memory issues. So I was told wrong and have been doing it wrong all this time. I have an on board charger and will be plugin it in after each outing. Maybe this will fix the short battery life.

Anybody know if it is okay to jam the batteries right up against each other? I can just barely squeeze 3 size 27 batteries in the battery compartment. Also, it the plastic battery tray necessary? There is not even 1/16" extra room on thee sides. Plenty of height in the compartment.

The batteries should be fine jammed up next to each other. I believe the trays are for catching acid that might spill out.

Still can't figure out what's wrong with my trolling motor batteries. Boat and batteries about two years old. Batteries will not hold charge. Have on board Ranger charger. Batteries are charged immediately after coming off the water. Fish about once a week. Before I go fishing I have to recharge my batteries. Takes about 3 hours before batteries fully charged, 5 red lights on charger for almost 3 hours. Fish for about 1 1/2 hours and recharge batteries (usually about 1 1/2 hours before fully charged. I have had the batteries checked at three different locations, even the electrolyte checked and all say the batteries are OK. I even disconnected all wires from both batteries and they still discharge when not in use. Any recommendations?

Yeah, Put them on the charger/maintainer and leave them plugged in.
Unless you're just using one of those car things.
If you can't afford a marine, in boat charger or one of those portable ones from minn-kota or others. Then at least spend $29.99 for a Battery Tender!!

Once the charger/maintainer charges it goes into a maintenance cycle, conditioning your batteries. Unplugging, then let sit, then putting back on the charger is not good.

this may seem strange but ,I need the lightest in weight I can find to run a troll motor, i am aware weight and battery hrs go together.
the reason is I have to carry the battery to the water and have health issues, so it needs to be as light as possible ,but still propel me around 3 or 4 hrs
thanks

Hopalong, the lightest option is lithium. The weigh about 10 to 12 pounds. Pricy but worth it in your case.

The reasonable answer is called "hand truck" (~$30 + normal deep cycle battery). Or, you can pay $1000 for that Li-Ion battery. Those have particular charging requirements, so forget the $30 charger also, btw.

Say WHAT????????? Do you buy them, use them until they are dead as a door nail (which won't be long), then buy new ones?

I have a 12 Volt trolling motor, my trolling motor battery is only lasting about half the Time it did when New. So I need to replace it - but would I see any benefit in wiring the New battery in parallel with the older battery or should I just replace it and turn in the old battery.? hmmm

Don't do it. The old battery will pull down your new one in short order and you'll be stuck with two bad batteries.

Yes, if you are going to rig 2 twelve volt batteries in parallel, they should be identical in age and capacity. If you are going to replace one, replace them both.

Time to replace my starting battery. Trying to find a group 27 with 1000+ MCA is like pulling hen's teeth. Looks like my only real choice is O'Reillys. Optimax manual says 1000 MCA minimum. 24s are easy to find but I want the extra reserve with electronics I run.

All of your battery prayers answered..... I run these in 3 different boats.... NEVER had one run down.

I still have about 100 of these, but they sell really fast.

Great Info in that batteryweb link!!!! thanks for posting this.

The only other Item I wish they'd have included would be "Battery Myths" wherein they could rid of of the 'old wives tale' that setting a battery on concrete will "kill the battery".
It is not true, though it *once was* back in my Grand Pappy's day.
But LOTS of folks still won't let it go.

That link's outdated but I did find your listing. What are the amp-hour ratings of these?

Sacred heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary....for those who don't, no explanation is possible
For the sake of his sorrowful Passion, have Mercy on us and the whole world

I need to replace my starting battery and looking at AGMs. Are there any issues using an AGM with proper MCA on a Mercury Optimax? I have heard that some automotive alternators do not charge AGMs properly.
