He's only 8 months old but learning quick. He's been on the boat with me since day one and survived a few tournaments so far. He likes those water squirrels a little too much though and messed up this video! But he's a great buddy on the water.

This is Rex...He loves to go fishing. His only problem is he wants to help you land every fish.

I think the main thing is what ever dog you get, know you will probably spend one season just training the dog how to behave in the boat. Dogs are like 4 legged 3 year old children. I have an old lab and he is my bud, but he swims constantly and I never took the time to teach him when he could or couldn't leave the boat, so he can't go with me very often. Next dog, I will take to the lake as a puppy and spend the summer training how to be my fishing buddy.

When she was younger my Heeler Dandy was my faithful fishing buddy. She would leap into the boat while it was still in the driveway if I started messing with rods.

We had a greyhound that was an awesome fishing buddy except, not being the brightest dog in the world, he would sometimes try to walk out onto the water. He couldn't swim and had very little body fat so he'd sink like a rock. He had a neon pink lifejacket (easy to see in the water) with a handy carrying handle on the back so we could hawl him back into the boat. He must have figured that since the boat was in the great outdoors it was ok pee right on the deck, nose proudly in the air. He also liked pork trailers. I wouldn't recommend a greyhound.

I have a lab pitbull mix that is the laziest most laid back dog that ever lived. She is great on the boat because she just lays there. I also have a Viszla but she is still a pup and wild as march hare so I haven't taken her on the boat yet. She is about house trained but until she his fully trained and stay calm for a while, she isn't going on the boat. Viszla's are CRAZY!

+1 - great for the family as well. My 2 year old drives mine crazy and he never acts mad.

I have never really been one to take my dogs with me. They are DOGS. My wife talked my into taking our Australian Shepherd out year before last. I reluctantly gave in. I was completely surprised at her behavior. She absolutely loves going fishing. She has never got in the way while landing fish, never jumped out of the boat, or even barked at other people/dogs/critters on the bank. She will stand up and look, but that is about it. I could not imagine a better fishing partner. She never complains about it being too hot, too cold, too windy, the fish aren't biting, I'm tired, I'm bored, or any of that. She is content just to go.

BTW, if I even mention going fishing around her, she perks her ears up and looks at me, like, well lets go. If I start backing up to hook up the boat, she is standing at the tailgate waiting for me to load her up.

None! My wife is lucky if she gets to go.

also letting them jump in and get wet or pouring water on them helps them cool down through evaporative cooling, the water helps pull the heat out of them

I have not taken out my pup yet, but how do yalls dogs handle riding in the boat? And where do yall put them while running? I have a beagle, so shes pretty small, I just don't know where to get her to stay while running around the lake.
