I don't want to hijack this thread but this reminds we of Joe Axton, bless his sole, before he his place on Fork, he had a trailer over at Pope's, he had the smartest lab I had ever seen in "Chochtaw" He is the reason I have a lab now, Anyway we were fishing over in five fingers, and just Joe and Chochtaw were in Joe's boat, Joe caught a pretty good fish, and he had also hit the whiskey pretty good that day also, so we when he bent over to lip the fish, Joe was hollarin and all of a sudden his false teeth fell out in the lake, well Joe went in to save the teeth and I guess Chochtaw went in to save Joe, and for the next 20 minutes, it was cussing, screaming, trying to hold on to the dog, boat, rod, and fish, dog swimming around barking like crazy. Absolutely the funniest thing I had ever seen, I cried I laughed so hard

Didn't read any of the responses but hope I'm the 1st with this suggestion:

Try a waterdog!

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

My Beagle "Glenn Rose" is laid back as can be if we'refishing from the boat. From the bank she is covering every inch of ground from here to Timbuktu. Once she gets on the trail, she's gonna be at it for a while. All you hear is the baying going out. Once the baying stops I know she's coming back. She's scared quite a few rabbits to death and brought them back to me. Unique surf and turf right there!

Got a Spinone Italiano earlier this year and plan on training him to hunt and fish from the boat this summer and fall. He's the most laid back puppy I've ever come across. Shoulda called him Zen!

My best dog ever was a long hair Jack Rat. A cross between a jack russel and a rat terrier with no tail. Lost him to the coyotes a couple of years ago. He could never be replaced.

I have fished with my labs and boxers since I was a boy. But it all depends on what kind of dog is right for your life.

Mini Aussie. Mine won't let me leave the house without him. They are very smart and easy to train. Mine loves to swim but has never jumped out of the boat.

You're right about the Papillons being smart. Mine was watching the movie "I am Legend" with me one night, and when the scene were Will Smith had to kill his dog came on my dog went nuts barking and growling. He still to this day, growls if he sees Will Smith on TV. Gonna try him in the boat later this spring.
