My latest video tries to tackle one of the more persistent questions that I encounter--how to read side imaging sonar and down scan. I spend just a little time on settings, then show you how to decipher what you're looking at on the screen. It includes a lot of screen shots with details drawn on the screen. A little bonus fishing video at the end too. Hope it helps.

Sorry in advance for the hoedown music. YouTube mutes most videos with music, so that's the best elevator music choice my software had...

Good Fishing,

Tom

Great vid Tom. Thanks! One question. I am new to DI and want to make sure I'm getting the most out of my unit. When you say set to 800khz in shallow water and 455khz in deep water, what are you considering shallow water/deep? 1'-15'shallow and 15+ deep?

Thanks guys. On the shallow vs deep, all bass fishing is considered "shallow" so we should always be using 800 kHZ on our units. "Deep" in this case and the 455 setting is more for the saltwater guys fishing hundreds of feet deep.

800khz can provide a degree of additional detail but at the cost of decreased range.

There's no free lunch.

What I have found is that at greater Sidescan ranges 800khz will display darker and less bottom view at the fringes (greater range) of the display range. I'm talking Sidescan ranges of maybe greater than approximately 40-50ft.

For me the key feature of Sidescan is the ability to "see" bottom features at substantial horizontal distances away from the boat. I want to have as much of a bottom view as I can get for a given water depth. 455khz does a better job of that than 800khz in my experience. For me I've not found the small sacrifice of detail at 455khz significant versus being able to have a better bottom view at greater sidescan ranges. I run 455khz probably 90% of the time.

Every Sidescan scenario will be somewhat different. The best thing is just to switch between 800 & 455khz for every Sidescan situation and use what shows what you find useful.
