What is the proper amount to tip a guide, say on a $400 trip? I know it's subjective, kind of wanted to see what the consensus is from you guys.

Id say 50-100 or more if it was an exceptional day. But like you said it depends on circumstances. It could be a tough day for bites but if the guide is workin his tail off to find fish you should still tip him.

10% and up, same as any other service.

10% for a ho-hum trip, 20% for a good trip, more if you feel the trip warranted it.

I'd say if you caught fish and the guy wasn't an arse, tip 20%,

$25 a pound, for every pound over for DD's for example;
12 pound fish $50 tip, 13 pound fish $75, etc...
and/or $5 for every slot fish after 20,

jim

Do you still tip 20% if you buy the guide breakfast and/or lunch on a 2-4 day trip? Also do you tip 20% each day you fished? That could get expensive real quick.

It's kind of like a meal at a nice restaurant. If you can't afford to tip the waiter 20%, you can't afford to eat there.

Yes. Fill up their boat for them sometime, too.

Fouz is the exception. Only person I know who tips more than him is Tony Gergely.

$50 plus lunch is a pretty good tip in my opinion. $100 if it's an amazing trip.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

A waiter makes 3 dollars an hour. A guide sets his own price, not the same thing.

Tip the same way you do in the service industry.
