I found this on TP&W's site. It's labeled as a new feature. You can search by lake and type of fish, and get a stocking history for any major lake.

I thought it was interesting info.

Kelly

Kelly,
That's a great site for us poor souls who like reading up on such matters.
I was thumbing through a book I bought about 10 years ago by Mark McDonald and Bobby Farquar called Set The Hook which shows a diagram of every lake in Texas and has the records, stockings and general info for the lakes.
I like knowing the history of the lakes as far as bass stockings and try to see what effect they had on the lakes.
Some people don't realize that as far as bass they are stocked as Florida bass, Largemouth bass and Mixed bass.
I saw where for instance Lake Lavon in 1954 was stocked with over 1 million largemouth bass and recieved over 500 thousand Florida fingerlings just this year.
Interesting stuff for us poor old bass fishermen.

Thanks Kelly. I looked through some of my favorite lakes, and some lakes just don't get the attention that others do.

12,752,065 walleye stocked into Lake Travis between 1976 and 1979.
I have never seen or caught one on Travis. I cannot believe there are not at least a few in there somewhere.

Fishing Frenzie,
That's the kind of interesting info that I like. For instance through the years at Lake O'Pines I have caught 3 or 4 fish that I have always called a Pike or Pickrell. I looked it up and don't see any evidence of any fish like that being stocked and would just like to know how they got there and exactly what they are. They are fun to catch on a spinnerbait and really put up a fight.

Walleye in central and North Texas lakes???
I am assuming since it was so long ago and noone catches them that they were not a success.

Does Lake meridith still have walleye in it?

I believe that Lake Meredith is the ONLY lake that has successfully kept it's walleye population. I haven't seen or heard of any coming from Grapevine in about 18 years.

I have actually caught a walleye on Travis, using a white spinnerbait on one of the points in Sandy by Starnes Island. Of course, that was in 1979-80.
But it was a nice 2lber.

Also had one hooked on Georgetown but didn't land it. That was around 1984-5.

TB - You can find out pretty fast what it was by going to the TPWD website, and looking at all the Freshwater fish pictures they have of the various species. True pike are very rare in Texas, and don't get very big. The State Record Northern Pike is only about 18 pounds I think, from Town Lake. Chain Pickeral look similiar but are much smaller, with a chain-link fence like color pattern in their scales. Walleye are very dark in color, slender when small, and fairly thick when they get older. All three fish are pretty rare in Texas, don't get any of the size they do further north. Also, just in case you didn't know, NEVER thumb those fish, or put a finger or anything in a pike, pickeral, or walleye's mouth, as they have teeth that will shred muscle in an instant. There are a few lakes in Texas that have viable walleye, and Northern populations, but not many, generally just the deepest/coldest lakes.

TB - Also, a quick look at the Lake Records section of the TPWD site shows no record of Northern Pike, or Walleye, but it does show a 3 pound + record for Chain Pickerel. So odds are, those are what you've caught.

As far as Walleye in Travis, there's a fairly good chance some of them are still alive. Just because people haven't caught them often doesn't mean they aren't there. After all, Walleye generally inhabit very different terrain and depths then bass do, especially largemouth. Since nearly everyone in Texas fishes Largemouth, sand bass, crappe, or catfish, but mostly Largemouth, it's not very likely many walleye would be caught, even when they are present and populous.
And there are often people catching fish and incorrectly identifying them. They could be catching walleye and not knowing it, calling them pike, or they could be catching large northern, and thinking they are some kind of gar. Lol. You never know.

I still get a kick out of the fact that everyone in Texas calls Bluegill/Sunfish perch. No where else in the country have I lived and heard them called Perch, probably because everywhere else in the country, if you say you caught a perch, then you are talking about Yellow Perch, a very common fish elsewhere, but very rare here. Rather like small, yellow/black-striped walleye, feed voraciously on minnows, only get to about 3-5 pounds. Only get to about 1 pound here though, and only in a few deep, cold lakes. Probably Meridith among others.
