There's a fine line that seperates Texas's different regions to determine if there is even a drought going on at this point. Some parts of Texas are swelled up while the western end is still high and dry. But is that really different than it is supposed to be? West Texas terrain is very different than central Texas, or West Texas desert.......vs lush big trees, green grass vs brown, the desert like Davis mountains are never going to look like east Texas pine tree forest. The biggest problem west Texas faces is growing population centers in a desolate azzz place. They have already sucked several lakes dry and are working on others. Based on the landscape of west Texas I am gonna go on a limb and say they never really got much rain, might just be that there's too many people in arid location. I moved to San angelo in 1999, we were in what they called a drought then, and 13 years later the drought is now even worse. I remember when guys caught 30 lb stripers in EV Spence reservoir, but they sucked that lake completely dry in what seemed like no time. I always remember driving to Dallas or San Antonio and Austin and thinking how much more lush the landscape was, kinda think that's just how it is. The same terrain differential exist throughout most of the South West, Arizona,New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, etc.

If you look at the lake levels from this time last year most are still down, so no the drought is still not over. Last January we had one of the wettest January's ever but then we didn't get a drop of rain for months.

Over or not,it doesn't worry me at all.It will rain and our lakes will be full and all will be well.

BTW..tell everyone there is no need to run your sprinklers everyday and flush only when you have company.... flush

A long term forecaster on Accuweather the other day said he has been saying for a couple of months that the La Nina responsibile for our drought is over...and that now the Climate Prediction Center is saying the same thing.

He said we are probably headed for an El Nino pattern by next winter, the opposite of La Nina. El Ninos are cooler and wetter than normal for Texas and the Southeast.

I haven't seen anything from the Climate Prediction Center to confirm their forecast, but I doubt the guy would have make it up.

I kind of measure it by how full Lavon is. Usually when Lavon fills up, all the other lakes are also full. Lavon has 4.5 feet to go and then the drought will be over and we can start on another drought if we need to.

It's pretty much over in the eastern half of the state. The western part of the state is another story.

Take a shovel, go out in your yard and dig a hole 18 inches deep. If the ground isn't wet, you're still in drought conditions.
