The guy who I just bought my boat from has always used basic Penzoil 2 stroke Premium TC-W3 oil. It's got about 1/4 tank in it and I was about to add a gallon of Quicksilver Premium that I had. Purely coincidentally, we ended up on the phone tonight and oil came up (weird I know). But, he said, "oh yean, I use that penzoil, non-synthetic oil. I told him I was about to put some quick silver in there and he told me that you should never mix oils.

Is that true??? Guess I never thought about it. Figured all 2 stroke oils that said TC-W3 could be mixed like motor oil in a car. Do any of you know the deal there??

It's a 200 HP Mercury Optimax ProXS.

Thanks as always!

Always run the oil tank down as low as you can safely and then add the other

I do it all the time. Its not a big deal. Better to keep topped off, IMO.

Ive had more than 1 engine builder tell me not to mix unless you had no other choice, because every oil every company uses different additives, that some of the additives dont mix well together and can cause clotting and or seperation. Meaning oil oil could break down another oil. As a rule I dont mix them together like Cody said run it low or drain the tank and start over.

I would run Premium Plus instead of just the Premium.

I think the DFI oil is more geared towards folks up north where it gets cold

OptiMax and other direct-injected (DI) engines put increased demands on lubricants than carbureted and electronic fuel-injected (EFI) engines. Oils used in traditional two-stroke engines dont provide the proper protection for the higher operating temperatures and reduced oiling rates of DI engines. Mercurys OptiMax/DFI oil has additional additives that provide the extra protection needed to maintain peak engine performance and reliability. Simply put, your engine will run longer and stronger with Mercury OptiMax/DFI 2-Cycle Outboard oil.

Agree with DFI for those motors just a little more in cost that motor deseves the best avail oil. Shop around for sale prices and stock up by the case when you can.

Dont mix them, especially from regular to synthetic and once you go synthetic stay synthetic.

Man, I'm glad I asked!! Thanks guys. Guess I'll stick to what he is using OR I'll run it just about dry and then change over to the more premium stuff. But, holy cow that stuff's expensive. Why are these toys so incredibly pricey for us men?? Geez!!!!! Nail polish like like a buck or two for a month supply! Chicks have it so easy. :-)

Thanks again. Always appreciate the quick answers.

Don't mix synthetic with non synthetic, it tends to gel up with any agitation.

Good oil is cheap even at $35 a gallon compared to a good rebuild or new powerhead.
