I have a Lowrance HDS5 unit and I am wondering if it is worth it to buy the $599 module to add structure scan to my unit or just buy the model that includes it? I am wondering if anyone else has purchased this separate unit and added this to their HDS5. Also, what is your opinion? Thanks
Michael

Yes, It's worth it. Stretch had that same unit and added it on. I couldn't tell you how many brushpiles we found with that thing. It's worth it in my opinion.

My Brother did the same thing. Bought the HDS-5 and the added the LSS-1. I think he got his LSS-1 for $499 NIB on E-Bay. Personally, I wouldn't take a HB over the Lowrance. I sold a less than a year old HB-1198SI & HB-898SI to buy a Lowrance HDS-10 & HDS-7. Had HB Tech come out and set up my units and still could not come up with the quality images that was on the HDS-5 my brother owns. Lowrance has a much better images than the HB.
Just an old mans opinion.

You will like a bigger screen for Sidescan. Having done this, just my opinion.

appreciate the advice. I wanted to say a little $$$, so I may go ahead and pull the trigger add-on. The screen is big enough for me.

Flounder, I have an HDS 5 and I added the Side Scan unit. Yes it is worth it. The only complaint I have is the size of the screen, but I am 65 years old and the eyes ain't what they used to be.

appreciate the advice. I wanted to say a little $$$, so I may go ahead and pull the trigger add-on. The screen is big enough for me. For Sure, Bigger is BETTER. But my brother has leaarned to work it to his benefit. You can set up the Side Scan to read one side or other. With it set up to read just one side, it will show to that side the same as my HDS-10 show both sides. So, he sets it up to one side, then runs down the bank in about 3'-4' of water, reading out to 100', and it shows images with no problems. The bigger the better, but it can be worked to benefit what you have. My brother don't miss a beat. keith

Just as a heads up. I have heard rumors that Lowrance will be announcing a rebate program starting on 2/16/2012. $150 rebate on the LSS-1 module.
