So I have been Bass fishing pretty regularly now for 2 years (minus deployment time). The first year, didnt catch a D*** thing, alomst sold my boat and gave it up altoghether until I hired an awesome guide (Dave Hogge) that really taught me ALOT the few times we fished. Dave put me on plastics (C-Rig/Tx Rig)and thats what I am confident in now. Up until 2 weeks ago, I have never caught a fish on a crankbait. I finally caught 3 keepers and lost a good one all on crankbaits at my last club tourney at Fayette county, so now im a little more confident with them.

Jigs are another bait that I have never caught a fish on and Its time i try and conquer that now. I fish Belton and Stillhouse pretty reguarly. Anyone have any tips on colors,(Football, swim jig) rod types, lengths, etc... or techniques on how to "flip or pitch" on these lakes? Thanks in advance for any info provided.

Never fished either, so I'll leave the comments to the vets on those lakes. But I can tell you this. Based upon what I've been told and from speaking with him personally, you certainly made a wise choice in guides and men in Mr. Hogge thumb

Ive never fished those lakes but i can tell you this; Jigs are a great bait to build confidence in. I started fishing them a lot here recently and i am addicted to them. Also, they produce great size fish. Good luck man!

Once you get that first jig fish, you'll spend a months eminent danger pay on more (if they haven't taken that pay away yet). I can't comment on either of those lake either but where I fish mostly (somewhat stained water) I throw either a PB&J or Tx craw in the day and Black/Blue or June bug at night. Trailer varies, sometimes I use actual jig trailers, other times I'll cut a baby brush hog in half and use the bottom half as a trailer because it has a lot of movement.

I'm not a super proficient jig fisherman yet but I am throwing them more than anything else lately making myself learn what the fish want.

Square bills and jigs for me catch my biggest bass. I still need a lot of work on my jig presentation though. I love to throw jigs. I have already decided to learn the swim jig this spring. May not catch as many but love the jig / trailer setup in buck brush and reeds.

Dirty jigs are awesome.

I like a darker color in stained water.

The only plastic that is ever on the back of my jigs is a Rage Craw. I bite off about 1/2 inch. I don't care if it is 90* water or 30*, thats the only trailer I use. If it is cold, just work it slower. Make multiple pitches to the same target.

Get the size hook you want, the type hook, your choice weight and your choice skirt colors plus the skirts are wire tired to last longer. Nope, not from me, I just one of Joey's very satisfied customers.

Go to: www.flatlandscustomtackle.com and check it out.

I have had some success with jigs at Fayette County. Actually, one afternoon I was pitching in the tall reeds/cat tails and managed 5 nice little chunks within about 45 minutes (3-4lbs each). That was the best day I've ever had on jigs (other than at Falcon). Just like everyone says...keep fishing them over and over. I do agree that the quality of fish from a jig seems to be better than with soft plastics. However, in the past 6-8 months I have had little to know success with jigs at Fayette. Part of the problem is that there is so much dead grass that you have to fish a weedless bait or you will get 2 lbs of junk moss as soon as you make one crank on the reel.

Good luck!

I never go out without a jig of some sort tied on. My biggest bass was caught on a jig and I have so much confidence in them. Once you take the time to learn how to properly fish a jig you will ask your self why it took so long to start fishing them. I also sent you a PM.

I want to learn em too. I am predominately a pond fishermen for bass. If I'm in the boat, I'm chasing cats. I am having a hard time fishing slow. Same with trigs. I love throwing a crankbait. Buy I gotta force myself to learn to fish a jig.

Just get yourself a good, quality flipping jig (1/2 ounce is good) and add a trailer like Strike King's Rage Craw. Keep the colors really simple -- same sort of colors you have confidence with plastics.

Use either fluoro or braid so you'll feel everything and you'll get solid hooksets.

Throw it, drag it, or flip it just like you would a t-rig. Fish it slow and you'll get bit soon. Once you get confident you can try and get a little more precise and fancy with them.
