Worst- Underwoods in Brownwood that ties Babe's in Arlington.
Had not stopped at Underwoods in 5 years, but it went from good to carp- taste frozen.... which it probably was. Had Babe's last month. Always heard how good the CFS was... major dissapointment.
Also tasted frozen/microwaved. The rest was good. Wife had the Pot roast which was really good.

Had a CFS at Cotton Patch in Corsicana last Friday. Pretty dang good!

Has anyone mentioned Grandys? That is the best chicken fry I have had around here!

I was in Alvin a 2 weeks ago and stopped in and had the CFS at Joes. It was good, I don't know if I'd consider it better than Mel's in Huffsmith or Dot's at Gulfgate, but I'd surely get it again if I was in the area.

Mary's is my favorite

The Cafe in Graford, yes that's the name of it. Has great food and I think it's better than Marys. Marys is good if the owner is there, some good days some not so much

I have not read the entire thread but I have had Mary's and it was great. I have been in Amarillo all week and had the chicken fry at The Stockyard Cafe at the livestock auction barn and it was top notch, right there with Mary's or maybe a little better. Cheap too!

I've been gong to Mary's for 20+ years, pretty much right after they opened by a couple of years or so, and it's been great. There were a couple of stints where is wasn't as good as it had been and there were a couple where it was foul and on one occasion I swore it off. Since that swearing off, I've been a few times and it's right back on track. I was there only two weeks ago and it was as good or maybe even better than I'd even had. There's as good now as they've ever been. in my opinion. That said, the prices are completely out of hand. 18 for a large? 15 or whatever for a medium? I'm an old fatso now so I get the small but, damn, even then it's 12.95. That's out of line. It's good but it's, to me anyway, simply not worth it. I can eat steak for that price. Mary's is good and if you want a CFS then, for my taste anyway, I don't know where you can get a better one but they can hang on to it fro that price.

Mels in Tomball cannot be beat!!!!

Mary's is great, but I do agree that their prices are high. For a large chain CFS, it's hard to beat ole Cotton Patch

If you haven't tried the Pepper Steak at Cafe Texan you need to give it a go next time you are there. It's very good. Whole pepper corns in a brown gravy sauce with the steak sort of like a swiss steak. It's unique and very good.

Moving on to my latest CFS, I tried it at Cypress Station in Cypress, TX. The meat was tender, and thick but the breading was lacking appeal to me. It was sort of thick and gooey. Not crisp and crunch like I like. I'll have to pass and try something else other than the CFS if I go back to that joint. Plus, they brought rolls but no butter. What good is a hot roll if you have to ask for butter and then its cold by the time the butter gets there?
