Well it had been since before the scorching summer we had that I've caught a Conroe bluegill since all my usual spots are now high and dry. I've been dying to catch a Conroe 'gill again so I set out determined to find a spot to catch fish from the bank!

I had been missing the days where I would be out my door by 4 a.m. to get to Conroe early and beat the heat to slay the beast 'gills that inhibit the lake.

Going into it I didn't expect to catch a thing, it was cold as hell, rainy (which in turn makes the water muddy), and windy to make it all worse. Also it had been pretty warm the days before so thought the cold snap mixed with the other elements would have them shut off, but dammit I was gonna try!!

First I went to the Stubblefield/Sam Houston National Forest area on the extreme north end of the lake. The very tippy top you could say grin The water was up from the last time I was there and since it was cold as hell it wasn't a damn snake sanctuary like it is in the warmer months. Started to rain again while I was fishing put that was no problem, but my rain suit on and I was good to continue fishing! After about a dozen snags to where I had to cut the line and not even being able to buy a damn bite I said screw this spot! Got some pretty good scenery pics though.

But I wasn't ready to give up just yet! I had one last spot in mind which was probably the only other spot where I had a chance. Under the 1097 bridge on the main lake!

So after carefully climbing down the rocks absolutely choked with litter I got rigged up and started to fish! Began to get some gnarly snags which after my experience at the first spot was really starting to get me worked up. But I stuck through it and tried to avoid the known snags.

After 30 about minutes I felt the *tap tap* set the hook and it's a fish!! I had finally caught another Conroe bluegill! It sure was a huge sigh of relief(partly because it wasn't another snag LOL) and a great feeling to catch a fish on this drought stricken lake again. Continued to fish a couple hours after that although I was pretty much frozen and landed some more! It sure was a special day and had a blast despite the weather conditions!

Now that I can catch fish there again I'm dying to go back!!

Great job fishing some really tough conditions to say the least. Gillinator, I think that HUGE bass has given you some confidence!!! And that is as important as any bait, gear, or fishable water. Super fishing on a horrible day!!!

Thanks fellas!

Chuck: Yes sir we need to get together asap! Maybe in the Fayette County/La Grange area as you've stated before? That'd be the best best until I can make it out there unless you plan to come all the way to Katy/Houston lol.

I have never fish Fayette but I have heard there are some big Gills in that lake. Have you fished it before?

Yeah it's known for it's redear population. I did fish it once. It was after I bought my kayak so I took it there to try it out for the first time. Mainly was getting used to the kayak and it was windy as hell didn't do too much fishing but still got to pull out a few nice ones including a big redear. The bad thing is it's not very bank fisherman friendly. It only has 2 public access parks. I didn't do well from the bank at the park I was at but I was still a rookie at the time so I'm sure if I went back I'd do better. Been meaning to do that and/or check out the other public park on the lake. There's also the Colorado nearby but I'm sure there won't be much action there till Spring.

I may be able to talk with a few friends of mine who have boats who would want to hit Fayette for some serious Sunfish Fishing. I will PM you if they want to go. I might also see if "Urban Fisher" wants to go and bring up a couple of his craft. Either way I am sure we can find somewhere to fish in the near future in between Katy and San Antonio. fish

That would be sweet! Definitely let me know whats up and we can figure something out. I also have the kayak and 3 person canoe that can be brought if we're not on a boat for whoever may come that doesn't have a craft.
