Wife had makes me one every year. Soaks it in brandy for a week or so before we start.eating it. My Mom used to send me a homemade one every Christmas when I was in the service so it is a tradition in our family.

As I was cleaning out my parents home after my Mom's death I found a few letters that my Dad had written to my Mom during WWII. I read them all and one of them asked her to thank her Mom for the Fruitcake that she had sent to Dad. Said he shared it with his platoon buddies and they all enjoyed it. Funny thing was the cake was sent to be enjoyed for Christmas and apparently arrived sometime in May of the following year. My Dad island hopped all over the Pacific and the cake had a hard time caching up to him. If they did indeed eat it and did enjoy it then those things have a shelf life longer than water. I have never have liked Fruitcake but apparently my Dad did.
