They can sell them while they can... If the patent goes through it will be a different story, until then it's GAME ON!

I checked on the patent. There is a patent for an alabama rig but it is for a screw lock worm weight. Patented in 1996 i believe. I recieved an email about using the name "The Alabama Rig" because they have got a trademark on that name. Since then I have changed the posts "that i could" to Bass Fishing Umbrella rig".
So there is a patent on the Alabama rig. Unfortunately its not the same thing we are talking about here.
I changed the name of ours from "Homemade Alabama Rig" because we talked about it and didnt want to muddy the waters or take anything away from the origional design, or step on the toes of the original maker. Gotta give him his credit, he did come up with using them like this, and hes got my respect.

Life journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved state.
But rather skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy carp what a ride!"

Guys, these are SO easy to make it isn't funny. Tortioned leader wire and swivels are all you need. I cut 2 18" wire and bend them in half. One 11" wire and bend it at 9". Put the swivel on it, take a short piece of bendable steel wire and wrap it. I then take Loctite marine epoxy and coat the wrap. When it cures, add the snap swivels. I have found no need for a weight but if you want one get a 1/4 oz. steel worm sinker, expand the hole to 1/8" and feed the wire through it. When using the weight I wrap the short end of the tortioned wire around the base so there is no need for the bendable steel wire and epoxy. Add snap swivels and go fish it. Takes me about 10 minutes tops and costs about $2-3.

It would take the net profits from 5 years worth of sales to pay for the patent attorney fees alone. Start with about $25K to get the ball rolling for a good patent attorney. This may take a year or three to get done. In the mean time while you were waiting you can throw in another $25-$50K to issue a Cease & Desist order to all the companies trying to knock off your original idea.... because there will be copies.

Look at Yamamoto's original Senko. One of the fish catchingest lures ever made... How many copies are out there now? Basically a 10% change to the mold and you are around the copyright laws. At least with a soft plastic mold it takes a machine shop to fabricate an injection mold so you can mass produce soft baits. The molds for most soft plastic worms cost between $5-10K depending on whether or not you want the ability to shoot the bait with a different color tail. With the Alabama Rig all you need is a lead pot and some wire....

I am always in favor of the small businessman making a profit but I agree with David. In 6 months there will be at least 4 knockoffs on the shelves. Sad to see but it is what it is.

i miss my stud fry...
