How do you sale these without getting in trouble via law from remake/patent? You post your intentions on as many public forums as possible.

Went to Lowes and made 5 before lunch. Either have to have one in Dardanelle or get beat by it.

They are not the same as the patented Alabama rig. These only have 4 wires and the original has 5. Plus if that was the case you would only be able to buy one type of lure, crankbait, spinnerbait, etc etc.

If I'd gave this rig more attention and realized how much $$ it was being sold for I'd have started building them and selling them since the profit margins so good. Thats ok because in a few months there will be enough knockoffs out there and anglers will have several that they quit using since everyone was throwing them.
Russell, You should sell them now while the money's good and then when it slows off have some money to go on an awesome fishing trip with your dad.

I read on flwoutdoors (check it out)that some are being made from egg beater wires by a few at the Everstart tournament. There were about 400 originals for sale at that event also, limit 3 per buyer at the $25 original price. There may be a shortage of egg beaters in that area, LOL.

My father is using spinnerbait wire .035 stainless steel. Everybody has to appreciate a retired fisherman trying to make a lil extra money. I do. OKBassforum, maybe a trip to falcon???? That would be nice. Anyone have a baitshop or marina that needs some let me know! I'm sure we can make a deal

wow it cost me 3.00 bucks to make them! Thats a cake walk with a 5th wire. How do you sale these without getting in trouble via law from remake/patent? and yes they hold up great and look good too. It's just a variation of an already widely used umbrella rig. There website says patent pending. I doubt they will be able to get a patent on it.

Yeah I've been down that road with a bait company that tried to patent a fishing lure. Problem is that most patent attornies worth their salt want to charge more than the average small business man can afford.
It would take the net profits from 5 years worth of sales to pay for the patent attorney fees alone. Start with about $25K to get the ball rolling for a good patent attorney. This may take a year or three to get done. In the mean time while you were waiting you can throw in another $25-$50K to issue a Cease & Desist order to all the companies trying to knock off your original idea.... because there will be copies.
Look at Yamamoto's original Senko. One of the fish catchingest lures ever made... How many copies are out there now? Basically a 10% change to the mold and you are around the copyright laws. At least with a soft plastic mold it takes a machine shop to fabricate an injection mold so you can mass produce soft baits. The molds for most soft plastic worms cost between $5-10K depending on whether or not you want the ability to shoot the bait with a different color tail. With the Alabama Rig all you need is a lead pot and some wire....
I am always in favor of the small businessman making a profit but I agree with David. In 6 months there will be at least 4 knockoffs on the shelves. Sad to see but it is what it is.

I did a patent search last week and couldn't find anything. We have 3 patents at the office now and until the patent is pending the game is on. It took 5 years for our first to go thru. In 5 years this rig will have been a fad. You might as well ride it until it has run its course.
