Looking for some opinoins on what gear ratio reel everyone is using when fishing their square bills. I have been going middle of the road with a 6.3.1 but curious if others use a slower or faster retrieve and why? Any difference when fishing around submerged timber vs. rocky bottoms?

I've gone to 7.3:1 Gear ratio on all my reels.

6.3:1 should be good. Easy to slow/speed up your presentation.

My buddy tells me 5.4:1 on big cranks, but 6.3:1 or 6.4:1 on square bills. I'm not reel specialized myself.

I like a 6.2:1...many older shimano reels have that gear ratio and I think it provides power along with moving that bait fairly quickly.

In the summer when you need to burn a squarebill, just reel faster or get a 7.3:1.

I use a Revo S which is either 6.3 or 6.4 (can't remember) on square bills and shallow cranks. I break out the Winch for XD6's and DD22's.

A lot of ppl like the slower reels but I like the 6.4-1 but sometimes I like speed crank but most of the time I'm disciplined enoough to slow down!

I saw an episode where KVD said that he uses a 5-1 for square bills as well as for deep divers.

I like the 6-1 for the smaller ones like the 1.5 but use a 5-1 for the 2.5 and larger.

I prefer 5:1. I think it's all in what you have confidence in.

I use a 7.1:1 and reel it fast as I can and pause 2 or 3 times on the way back to the boat 95% of the time when I throw a squarebill. The 5% when I don't reel it as fast as I can are the times when I'm trying to run it through super heavy brush and bang it around some without hanging it up too bad.
