Doesn't make much sense...if you are wanting to flip a company you improve it to make a profit on the sale in the future. We will see but saying they are low on seasonal inventory because of a buyout is premature at best. I say the same, however, its not uncommon to buy a company, do nothing with it, strip its assets and move on. Ut, premature to make that conclusion, I concur. Now, go support your local tackle shop if you have one!

They are a massive asset management and private equity firm. They own a diverse global portfolio of different companies. My only experience with them on a retail level was with Toy's R US, which was a company headed in the wrong direction, until KKR took it private and reinvented nearly every part of the company from real estate to merchandising to service. They became one of the only big-box retailers in the country to grow during this recession. I doubt this lack of stocking at local stores has anything to do with KKR, but it may indeed have to do with the sale. It will be months or years before we see the imprint of KKR on the specific departments. One reason the previous owners said they were selling was they had taken the company as far as they could (or wanted to) without big money to finance the next level of growth. Maybe these problems are indicative of the kind of issues that the outgoing owners are hoping the new group can address.

In May of this year Academy was sold to KKR. If you are familiar with KKR you'll know what to expect for the Academy stores. Although KKR purchased Academy in May there is no mention when the actual transaction will be completed. Until it is I'd suspect moral and inventory to be lacking at many of the stores. KKR is not in the sports industry and not likely to be in it for the long haul with Academy. They are looking to turn a profit... not own/manage academy stores. +1 Doesn't make much sense...if you are wanting to flip a company you improve it to make a profit on the sale in the future. We will see but saying they are low on seasonal inventory because of a buyout is premature at best. You could be right. But.. The company I worked for when KKR became a "Partner" saw it's most productive divisions sold off along with other assests reducing a 4 Billion per annum company to a shell of it's former self. The sale was expected to be completed in 6-8 weeks so I'm assuming that has happended. The Gochman family remains a minority investor but I don't have a clue how that impacts day-to-day operations much less long term planning. I'd suspect they have no say in operations.

Call Academy Headquarters to be heard. Those items won't be stocked until next fishing season.

Hey guys if you come in the lewisville store and can't find what you need ask for me, John Braig. I use to be the hunting and fishing manager and always had to fix counts and make sure the shelves and pegs were full but the last 8 months have been the team sports and camping manager at the store so haven't been over there as much, but will still do anything to help you guys get what you need, even if I have to transfer stuff or order it from the DC for you. Sorry the department is out of stuff but come in and I'll take care of you. John thanks for the info, you would be one of a very few to help in that store. Once you leave the front door, shoes or the reel counter is the only place you will see an associate.

I googled "KKR Academy" and found plenty of articles on the buyout. KKR has bought out Dollar General and Toys R Us. Both of those retail stores are still around and growing so I think the outlook is good for Academy.
The managment has to realize that while they may not make much money on the basic fishing supplies of hooks, weights and line, that brings people into the store. Once in the store, then they buy other stuff like tennis shoes for the kids or camp chairs for the kid's soccer games. If they don't carry the "supplies" I need, then I don't go to the store and the kid's tennis shoes get bought by Mom in another store like Target or Stride Rite.
I will be in the Lewisville store this weekend. If I come out with only tennis shoes for my 4 year old, I won't be back until Spring.
