I stopped at the Academy in Texarcana and they were full of stock.

When I used to work up in Plano, there was a store called Gallyans (I think thats how its spelled) they carried lures for pike fishing. Never understood that store.

Academy is in transition between old & new plannograms - season. Happens every year. Just talked with the buyers. New fishing layout is coming and better that ever. Seasonal Transition - That's all.

The Abilene Academy has to be the worst one in the state. It carries only big bite and a few zoom plastics. There is not a Grande Bass product n the store.
This store can't even keep their own H2O brand in stock.

Taking 5 to the weigh-in occurs when opportunity meets successful execution of one's preparation.

In May of this year Academy was sold to KKR. If you are familiar with KKR you'll know what to expect for the Academy stores. Although KKR purchased Academy in May there is no mention when the actual transaction will be completed. Until it is I'd suspect moral and inventory to be lacking at many of the stores. KKR is not in the sports industry and not likely to be in it for the long haul with Academy. They are looking to turn a profit... not own/manage academy stores.

AS GrandeBass1 stated, Academy is in themid season where their "planograms" are changing for new product lines. When he said he is in communication with the "buyers" I know he i giving us firsthand info!

Now, as to my own experience working bigbox retail, I can tell you that even though Store GMs are held accountable for their stores sales, teir voice is a small one if any volumn ar all. THERE IS NO REASON to be out of "stud items" (items that sell with freq turnover or those that cause the purchase of other items.)

What YOU the buyer is experiencing is a PRIME EMAMPLE why you should patronize you local small business tackle shop. Their prices may be higher than those in Academy, but rest assured they understand the fishing industry because they are fisherman also AND its their livelyhood!!! The next time you shop in Academy, WALMART, Dick's, Cab or BPS I just want you to think about that OR continue to complain to a Store GM with no corporate voice! You choice, my take! soap

Doesn't make much sense...if you are wanting to flip a company you improve it to make a profit on the sale in the future. We will see but saying they are low on seasonal inventory because of a buyout is premature at best.

Hey guys if you come in the lewisville store and can't find what you need ask for me, John Braig. I use to be the hunting and fishing manager and always had to fix counts and make sure the shelves and pegs were full but the last 8 months have been the team sports and camping manager at the store so haven't been over there as much, but will still do anything to help you guys get what you need, even if I have to transfer stuff or order it from the DC for you. Sorry the department is out of stuff but come in and I'll take care of you.

Here is a May 15, 2011 Wall Street Journal quote from management at KKR. I have personal experience with a company purchased by KKR and can tell you this is a 100% change from their previous mode of operation: "Kravis also told investors that KKR and its competitors no longer were about leveraging up and stripping down companies it purchases: The days of financial engineering in private equity are long gone, you have to work the business Kravis said, pointing to the firms dedicated unit, called Capstone, that helps improve management and operations at companies KKR purchases"

There may be hope for Academy after all.

Back in the 80's KKR purchased Safeway grocery stores in Texas. After contract disputes with the grocery employees failed KKR closed all the stores in Texas.
