A couple years ago, I got an electric hook sharpener. I was wondering if these things do a decent job at sharpening hooks, or if they are pretty much worthless? I know alot of people replace hooks on traps other lures with sharper hooks, would using the hook sharpener do the same thing?

It seems that no two fishermen agree on what a SHARP HOOK is and/or how to make one. Get ready for the onslaught of answers. Todays hooks are chemicaly sharpend and can not be sharpened that way again. The best you can do is to GRIND it to what YOU think is sharp, how to do that only you will like the finished product.

I sharpen my hooks always. It does not go in the water until the point catches on my fingernail, not just scratches it, till it catches. Then I know it is sharp. I use a diamond sharpener, mostly, and draw the hook, point first, across the diamond sharpener, first on one side then I do the other side. Never go more than two strokes on any side before switching to the other side. I only do two sides and not 180 degrees from each other....usually about a 60 degree angle. Marbravo

I've used a hook sharpener for years. Work carefully so you don't grind the entire hook point off. Make sure it will hang on your thumbnail, if it slips it isn't sharp yet.
