A few friends and I are talking about taking a 2 or 3 day kayak trip down the Devil's River in the fall. I'd like to get some opinions from the group on whether or not you would be worried about your safety if you were to do this. I'm not really sweating it, but a couple of other guys are.
...would you do it?

Not only would I do it but I have done it and want to do it again! the only thing I dont like about it is that the trip from Bakers down to the take out beats the [censored] out of your boat!
I been thinking of doing a trip up from the lake. Maybe getting a boat to shuttle us up 8-9 miles and then paddle back down to rough canyon marina over a few days. need to see if there is some sort of shuttle for that.

The only problem is, unless you know someone with land, you have to make the trip from Bakers to the Natural Area (14 miles)in one day not much fishing. Anyone that says they stay on an island is full of it, there are none and they tresspass!

Anyone that says they stay on an island is full of it, there are none and they tresspass! We camped at around 9-10 miles. After the 9 mile point there are lots of small flat areas on the river where you can camp. There is lots of controversy about whether its legal to camp on the bank as long as your in the river bed. If you look at a map just make sure you camp away from any roads or homes in the area and you will be OK.

I disagree with you RACKnFIN. The riverbed is property to the State of Texas and thus public. Just because there's an island or the river bed is exposed due to drought doesn't mean it's private property. There is a definite line (riparian boundary) that separates the private property from state property. Unfortunately, it's very hard to distinguish what is private or public, and that's when conflicts arise. Read these: TPWD Article 1 TPWD Article 2 Basically, when you setup camp, stay off the grass and you'll be alright.

Yes, do the trip and don't think twice about your safety, you are 100% safe from illegals IMO.

the only thing dangerous about the trip is the remoteness of the place. If your worried about it rent a spot messenger or a sat phone. Its worth the $80-$100 for piece of mind.

There is an island to camp on about 1/2 mile past Jarret's crossing. Jarret's crossing is at mile 9. It still took a good hard day's paddling with a little fishing mixed in to get there when we went in March of this year. Read all the posts on here and Texaskayakfisherman.com about preparing for this trip. It is by far my favorite camping/kayak trip to date. We also "packed" some protection to be on the safe side, but we felt pretty safe out there. I highly recommend buying this book if you go. http://www.amazon.com/Devils-River-Louis...5745&sr=8-1It has decent topo maps and a couple hints about running some of the rapids. It also has a lot of the history of the area which I thought was really cool to read about. Have fun! I can't wait to go again.

and search the many threads about the trip. Even go over to TKF and search there. Probably more reports there than on here.

There is a definite line (riparian boundary) that separates the private property from state property. Unfortunately, it's very hard to distinguish what is private or public, and that's when conflicts arise. Neumie, The reason it is not ok is because I was told by a game warden out there. I have a buddy who new a land owners daughter and was told it was ok to camp on there place on the river. The next morning we broke camp and were met by the game warden just down stream who was waiting on us. We were detained for two hours until we could prove that we did have permission. This river and a few others still have the old Spanish laws of the river bed itself is private property. Once you step out of the watercraft you are tresspassing. I found it hard to believe but that was the case. It is hard to believe that you are in the middle of nowhere and see not a soul, yet someone is always watching. No one has to believe it but I experienced it first hand. Read these: TPWD Article 1 TPWD Article 2 Basically, when you setup camp, stay off the grass and you'll be alright.

Well, unfortunately you were detained for no reason. Under Spanish and Mexican Law perennial streams, regardless of navigability, were and are public. When Texas became a sovereign nation they acknowledged English Common Law which defined public waters by those that are navigable, but would still honor grants given out by Spain and Mexico under Spanish Law.
Sounds like you got some "hot shot" warden fresh out of the academy or one who caters to the land owners. Either way they don't fully understand the law or court cases that have set precedence.
We have a right to camp on the stream bed of the Devils River whether landowners like it or not.
