been camping for the last 30+ years grew up camping with primitive reenactment groups (civil war) figured id throw my 2cents in we have stayed at everyone of these places ill add as i have time
Lake Whitney
Below the Dam by the power plant: (city park i think) go across the dam from whitney and its your first left....
Cost: FREE Sites:8 Toilets: NO Water: NO Comments: some river access not much VERY QUITE, not alot of people camp here fire rings, one of our fav places to camp on Lake Whitney never had any issues with stealing camping stuff ect fav site: the last one on the road by the turn around there are two sites here, excellent for 3 or more tents, good family place. very shaded! only problem is with this area, people seem to like to dump their animals down there. 1 outta 3 times we go here, we bring back a dog. this spring someone dumped a litter of 4 week old kittens in a box in the dumpster at night. i was lucky to be walking by the dumpster in the morning and found them.
If you are on the river please pay attention to the generating sirens. I have seen at least 10-15 cars/trucks get washed down stream, as u can park on the river bed to launch. the water comes up very quickly. canoes, kayaks, very small 2 man boats with paddles, and air boats are fine, but river is too shallow for anything else.
Soldiers Bluff Campground: (across from dam campground)
Cost: FREE Sites:10-15 Toilets: yes Water: in-between sites Comments: most sites are very shady, 2-4 are open but are within 30 feet of water. gets pretty busy in the summer, as a ton of people swim here, water is very deep 80+ feet.straight drop off from cliffs...be careful with children that are not good swimmers...ive dived this area, down to 80 feet, and it just keeps going down. Good fishing in the cove at night. this park does have a gate and a attendant gates close at 10:00pm
Lake Whitney State Park:
Cost:varies Sites: tons Toilets: yes Showers: yes Water: yes and shared Comments: Fav site: # 60 right on the water sit at camp and fish very nice state park a wonderful astronomy program once a month normally nice swimming beach a few skunks good fishing areas
Loffers Bend West/East 2 parks: Core of Eng park across the dam going back into whitney from the dam site
Cost: varies Sites:tons Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments: ok park, not my fav, we prefer to camp below the dam for free typical core of eng park nice swimming beach, but tends to be very very crowded hard to fish
Kimball Bend Park off of SH 174 (Core of eng)
Cost: free Sites:tons Toilets: yes Water: yes shared showers: no Comments: on the brazos river, pretty nice sites, shady, good fishing on the river...
Cedar Creek Park: (core of eng) off of FM 2604
Cost: Free Sites:20 or so Toilets: 1 restroom Water: yes shared showers: no Comments: very nice park, covered tables, fire rings, some open sites, some with huge trees ok fishing double lane boat ramp
Walling Bend: (core of eng)
Cost: Free Sites:8 i think Toilets: 1 restroom Water: yes shared showers: no Comments: very small park, but very quite 2 boats ramps, pretty good fishing about 100 ft of shore stripers like to run through this area late spring
Plowman Creek: (core of Eng) FM 56 south of kopperl
Cost: $10-16 per night Sites:30+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments: pretty nice park, 2nd on our list for whitney. this park is very nice, horses are allowed and there is a 12 mile or so hiking trail really good fishing in this area in the fall covered tables fire rings ect
Cedron Creek Park: (core of eng)
Cost: $16 per night Sites:40+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments: very nice park also, Fav sites: 45, 1 and #2 this park closes during the winter...i think starting oct
Steele Creek (core of eng)
Cost: Free Sites:15-18+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: NO Comments: park fills up really really quickly on fri for the weekend covered tables, fire rings bbq grills 1 boat ramp, very nice camp sites our #3 pick for whitney Juniper Cove: (Private campground)
Cost: $30 plus a night (camping) Cabins: $100+ a night Sites:80+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments: more of a rv park . some nice spots thou they do have cabins, if your wanting a place to get away from it all and not camp i would suggest this place for sure. Marina gas food, everything u need for a week or a weekend trip indoor heated fishing barge.... we normally make a trip over here to get bait and also fish on the barge at night
There are several other places on the lake that has cabins/rv park, we have just never stayed
Lake Tawakoni Most of this lake's shore land is still privately owned. this lake is very clean and has always been that way.
Wind Point Park: (just search they have a web page) Cost: $16 Sites:80+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments:
Our fav place to camp at tawakoni, this is a privately run park, have camped here for the last 10+ years. 3 sides are surrounded by water fishing from the bank everywhere, fishing pier, fish cleaning stations, boat ramp, banquet hall, play ground, swimming beach, Rv spots, Screened Shelters, small store with Ice ect the park is not strict, u can park on the grass, just pull up to the shore where you want to fish there are fire areas on the shore, that u can use I cant say enough about this park, it can get very very busy thou esp on holiday weekends. The fishing here even from the bank can be incredible. on the point in the spring when the sand bass are running, u can catch a good 1.5# every cast. we have limited out several times within 1 hour. Shad are crazy here sometimes in the spring, slam a car/truck door shut and the lake turns over with silver. I caught my largest catfish ever off of this point also, a monster 47#.i average 4-10# blue cats from the bank all the time. By the fishing pier about 200 yards out is a channel that runs through the trees. Fall the stripers like to run this channel.
Lake Tawakoni state park:
Cost: $20+ Sites:80+ Toilets: yes Water: yes showers: yes Comments: typical state park, nice swimming area, this is a small park thou...not many places to fish, there is a boat ramp. Camp sites are too close together.. fire rings are like 25 feet apart. whoever designed this park tried to cram too many campsites into too small a area..
