Yes, flouro will get a crank deeper. And a thinner will get it down deeper as well. What I try and do with cranks is to use a deeper diver then the depth I'm trying to get too. For example, If I'm fishing bush tops 10 feet down I'll throw a dd-22 -- it's easier for me to wind it down and let it float up a bit then try and get a 10 foot crank down there it the bottom of its range. I can work it a lot easier that way.

Fluoro will give you another 18-24" of depth over mono of the same pound test with a DD22.

If most people use smaller diameter line to get a crankbait deeper, why wouldn't they use flouro instead of mono? Sounds like a 15lb flourocarbon would get just as deep as a 10-12 mono, and you would be much less likely to break off. Are there any positives to using mono other than the cost of the line?

Ken,
I would LOVE to find out where you got youer information, because my test resulted in the most was 10" and that was when I spooled my reel with the TM. The average was only about 5-7" from mono to fluoro. It does not sink that much because you are not letting the line sink, UNLESS you cast it adn reel it down and suspend the bait or use suspending baits, and THEN it can get the added depth, but not on moving baits.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

12lbs. Seaguar invisx under normal conditions or 15lbs. if it's really nasty! Never had any problems with 12lbs.
As long as you have a good rod with parabolic action or at least a lighter tip!

Most of the deep cranks I make either suspend or are very slow risers though. My square bills & shallow cranks do float however.

Thad,
I get my information the old fashioned way. On the water. LOL
What I know is after fishing 15# Big Game for many years with DD22's I hit bottom in places with 15# Seaguar that I never hit before. I am quite sure Seaguar 15# makes my bait run about a foot & a half to 2' deeper. Same thing with smaller baits like a Deep Little N too.
So, no, I don't have any scientific spreadsheet that shows all the results from 20 different lines but what I do have is a LOT more practical. It's called time on the water.

Believe me Ken has fished a crankbait more than most,I would listen to him! Back before the Fluorocarbon days you could really tell a differance on line size and the number of bites. For instance 20lb Big Game VS 15lb Big Game, and for smaller shallower running crankbaits I would drop to 10 & 12 pound line.As far as braid for crank's I would run from it even with a Floro leader.

Its all about the line diameter. Sinking vs floating line cant come into play with a DD-22 pulling so hard on the retrieval. 10 pound big game has a diameter of .012 12 pound is .014 15 pound is .015 12 pound Seaguar is .011 15 pound is .013 20 pound is .016 15 pound seaguar is .001 thinner than big game 12. Based on my calculations this would give me an additional 2.46 inches of depth.
