So what is it with Texas fisherman and using the word Perch to describe a bluegill?

I’ve included illustration's below to show the difference between fish.

If this posts stops one person going forward from mis-identifying the species of fish it has served great purpose.

I believe that perch is called a yellow perch up North. It is from the Walleye family. I would say that yellow perch tastes better than any fish in Texas.

That's pretty rare right there. Most of my personal experiences have led me to determine that the best way to call one is to yell "who dropped this $20???, then stand back and watch the scrum. Or I just call them biotch.

Cept Jersey Dan. The chicks dig his schtick, so I calls him brah breakdance You ever seen that cat roll up to a boat ramp? Pimpin'. Serious Pimpin' Dude's got it goin' on bolt

well to be technical the bluegill is not on your list buddy, it happens to be blue bodied with turquoise striping on its gillz, and everything we have here in texas we call a perch is a sunfish not a bluegill, and to be really technical all bass species are in the sunfish family but we dont call them sunfish do we? nor do we call a sand bass a white bass, and why do we call bullhead catfish poliwogs? simple answer we are southern a dont give a [censored] as long as it tastes good in the fryer

My Grandfather was a Perch fisherman. He loved to cathem and eatem. Some of my earliest memories are the two of us in his old wooden skiff catching huge bluegill and redear out the local city lake. He instilled in me love for fishing that has lasted a lifetime.
I am mighty glad I did not realize how ignorant he was. It is unfortunate we did not us a local "jersey boy" around to tell him how annoyed he was.

'Cause we want to and 'cause we can. Two things in Texas that usually won't get you very far with Texans: flattery and pedantry. smile

2 options below could end your dilemma

Option 1
Once shues gize stop calling a Mullet a hair cut we'll stop calling the sunfish a perch.

Option 2
Bring this subject up to Chuck Norris
