Not just Texas, they use "perch" for everything from bluegill to crappie here in Oklahoma. Where I grew up the word was "bream", but it primarily referred only to bluegill. We had goggle-eyes, shellcrackers, etc. and "bream" was rarely used for those. Using one word is kind of confusing, but I find many people don't know what kind of sunfish it is anyway.

I don't care if someone calls them bluegill, bream, sunfish, or perch. When I hear people calling bluegill, perch, I simply inform them that we only have one species of perch in Texas, which happens to be the log perch. If they continue to call them perch, oh well.

Straight from TPWD...

Quote:

Other Names Bream, Brim, Perch, Sunfish, Sunperch Description Lepomis, the generic name, is Greek and means "scaled gill cover". The species epithet macrochirus is also Greek and means "large hand" which may refer to the body shape or its size. Bluegills may be distinguished from other sunfish by the dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin, vertical bars on their sides, and a relatively small mouth. The spiny dorsal fin usually has 10 spines (but may have as many as 11 or as few as 9), and is broadly connected to the soft dorsal. The anal fin has three spines. The back and upper sides are usually dark olive green blending to lavender, brown, copper, or orange on the sides, and reddish-orange or yellow on the belly. Colors are more intense in breeding males, and vertical bars may take on a reddish hue.

I'm gonna stick with Perch out of habit.

Well that's what separates me from the rest out here. I refuse to adapt aka sell out. Ask anyone at Fork. I used to show up with the Mercedes Benz truck towing a legend boat, listening to the most hardcore NY hood music rolling up to the ramp and still cash checks at Tournaments. And the females... sheettt. Lets not even get into that, they are intrigued by the different guy. After all isn't that how I ended up on the TFF celeb list... haha

Hold on just a dern minute here, I just figured it all out.

Jersey Dan is really Michael Iaconelli

No wonder Cam likes you so much Dan, you look like Jay Kendricks twin in that pic! And we all know what he thinks of Jay! bannana2

This coming from Sinkey? The closest you get to a lake now is filling up your kids swimming pool in the back yard.

PROCRAFT FOR LIFE

You're right. But that swimming pool is Lake Lewisville, and it is in my back yard. Literally!

Not from where I'm from. If you are not used to hearing that stuff then you are definitely City Folk.

Which brings up another point that this thread reminds of. City Folks moving into my part of the country and then wanting to tell me how to live. For instance, wanting to enforce yard restrictions, building codes, and junk policies county wide. I'm sorry but if you want to live with restrictions, then please go back to where you came from. Please don't move into my area to retire and get away from the life you had, to live more like me. Then only to want to change things to be just like where you came from. My land is just that. MINE. It has my name on the deed. Not yours. Please don't tell me how to live.

Sorry, got carried away. Rant over.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

What's the real difference between a Yankee Aquarium and a Texas Aquarium?

On the tank, a Yankee Aquarium will have the common name of the fish, the scientific name in Latin, and a brief description.

Whereas, a Texas Aquarium will have have everything labeled as perch unless its a largemouth bass, and instuctions on how to fry it.....!
