So what is it with Texas fisherman and using the word Perch to describe a bluegill?

I’ve included illustration's below to show the difference between fish.

If this posts stops one person going forward from mis-identifying the species of fish it has served great purpose.

Bluegill / Sunfish

When I came down south I couldn't figure why people would call a pen, an ink pen. Well I figured it out. People would get confused if they were talking about a pen or a pin. It's not peen, it's PEN!

Forget about it!

Oops, after much painstaking research, I have learned that a tomato is "technically" a fruit. So are cucumbers, green beans, squash and walnuts... shows you what I know!

No one in NJ / NY says the word pop. You are probably thinking of the people that live in upstate ny in the mountains that claim they are from NYC living 8 hrs away. [/quote]

I am from upstate NY and would NEVER claim I was from NYC. In fact when I tell people I am from NY I make sure I say NOT NYC. That place smells.

As far as bluegill being called perch that has got to be the most annoying thing about fishing with a Texan.

Who cares? I call "perch" rock bass and they are here in tx I've caught them on accident. If it's a panfish I'm calling it a perch and if I catch anything that's not a bass then Idc what the technical name of it is

I have an idea. Go back to where ever it is you came from and call them what ever you want.
