Besides Orange and yellow rods on my boat this is by far the most annoying thing I encounter on the water. It truly upsets me. There is a huge difference between a Perch and a Bluegill. I don’t even think any Perch live in Texas waters.

So what is it with Texas fisherman and using the word Perch to describe a bluegill?

I’ve included illustration's below to show the difference between fish.

If this posts stops one person going forward from mis-identifying the species of fish it has served great purpose.

Bluegill / Sunfish

No one in NJ / NY says the word pop. You are probably thinking of the people that live in upstate ny in the mountains that claim they are from NYC living 8 hrs away.

why do yankees call a fish that is in the bass family a white perch?

and why is "bream" the generic term for a sunfish when it's a fish that more resembles a shad in eastern europe?

why is a bass a bass when it's really sunfish?

why do they call a peacock bass a "bass" when it's a ciclid?
