I would do some research first and find out what kind of if any modifications have been done to it. They have a bad wrap, but I have heard the gremlins can be fixed with some aftermarket help. No personal knowledge about them. This should be one of the first production runs of the 6.0. Personaly I would look for something else unless you know what your getting into or can take a very knowlegable person about current diesel motors with you.

That wold be the second year of the 6.0. Great trucks. There are a few major things you will need to look at before purchasing. I would take it to a reputable local diesel shop. I personally use Centex Diesel (www.centexdiesel.com) and i live 2 hours away. They are just the best at what they do.

1 EGR Cooler- The coolers on these motors failed causing blown Head gaskets and sometimes worse.

2 Aftermarket Head studs need to be put in those motors asap. Stocks fail over time or when modded. just think of it as insurance.

3. Make sure the factory coolant is out. Dont ever use the ford coolant that came with the truck.

6.0 is a great motor with a few aftermarket fixes. Will run quieter, smoother and more efficient then the famous 7.3

Well I know they made some '03 7.3 leter motors as well so '04 is the first full run in my mind grin

And yes they can be made into great motors... but at a cost so if it isnt a great buy then better can be had elsewhere. Also just taking the Ford coolent out of it may leave some issues if it has already been run in there for 100K. Befor I bought it I would have it checked out hardcore, not just tire kicking!

6.0 can be hell. You MUST take care of the EGR and the head bolts. If you don't, you're looking at multi thousands in repairs and heartache. IF you have the money to upgrade these things after you buy it and you have checked the motor out backwards and fowards then go for it. Once upgraded they are good engines and good trucks.

Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

180K would scare me. Like Cypress said take it to a diesel shop, not a dealer and have them check it out.

get the vin number and take that to the ford dealership and ask for a oasis report, that will tell you if it had any warranty work. its free. depending on when and if they did warranty work, they may have upgraded the head bolts to stronger ones. i have a 06 with 135k and have had a programmer on for 2 years now with no problems and they guy before me towed a 5 wheel with it.

Add a zero and you can get a new one.

My opinion is follow the advice about the EGR and head bolts. There were more problems with that motor back when they were new like injectors going out but after 7 years the problems you're looking for are the ones that come with time.

For 6 grand and if its in good condition it still should be a good deal.
