I've tried them all and the old American angler ultra was my favorite. Luckily I still have about 5-6 new ones plus the 5 were using now. None of the brands I've tried including the ultra will last us long. I wish someone would make a good one that lasts. Joey and I found a stash and bought all of them. You have to find the older ones w/ the old transmission. The new American Angler stuff is light duty and not worth messing with...and that came from one of the techs on the phone. The best knife they made was the Saltwater Ultra. I bought 3 online last month and hope they last a while. We burned one up at the coast this summer and it was only a month onld. But we cleaned alot of fish with it.

Use electric tape to tape down the trigger. They will last MUCH longer and not get as hot. Also easier to fillet when you don't have to hold the trigger down. It's the on/off switch in the knives that usually give out first.
Since I've been doing this the blades wear out before the knives quit.
Trust me on this. What happens is you have 25-75 fish to clean..does the knife run all that time? Seems like you would burn it up in one cleaning.???

Kinda what I thought when an old crappie guide on Lake Fork told me about this back in the late 90's. I always had to keep a back up on hand as I was going through 2-3 a month cleaning crappie. Nothing worse than getting to number 45 on a 2 man limit and the knife crappin out. We clean up to 100-150 a day sometimes and the knife just keeps on chugging. Like I said, it's almost always the switch in the trigger that goes out first, not the motor. In fact the knife doesn't get near as hot this way as constant off/on/off/on. I've got knives at the lake house that are over 3 years old, have cleaned literally thousands of fish, and they still work. Taped trigger, of course. Get everything set up and ready to clean, plug in the knife, and get after it. Your knife and knife hand will never get fishy, only the blades. Another bonus. Just another day at the cleaning table.
