Man, that would be the absolute last straw. First Walleye, then Yellow Perch.

Actually, after some of the comments from Somervell residents I would be afraid to try to use their lake. You have to show ID, and I am pretty sure my name is well known.

My legs have been pulled a lot since I started this crusade.

I remember going out on Lake Erie with my dad and loading the coolers with those babies. A lot of the nice big 10 - 12 inch jumbos too. We'd use those spreader rigs and pull up two at a time when when in a good school. And as a bonus, you would occasionally pull in a nice walleye or smallie.

Karpbuster - Yep. That sounds like a good oops to me. Perch eat much better than trout IMO.

Gents if any of you ever make it up to the NW, Specifically Washington State, go to the East side of the Mountains to potholes reservoir near Moses Lake. It's one of the best fisheries I have ever had the pleasure of fishing....

Yellow Perch (True)
walleye
Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout
Small Mouth and Largemouth bass
Channel and blue catfish
AND a small population of Kokanee (Landlocked Sockeye Salmon)

In addition to the main lake there is the "Dunes" and the "potholes" a series of over 100 small to medium lakes in the scab rock area below the main reservoir's dam.

You can spend years there and not hit every fishing hole. Walleyes to 7 Lbs, smallmouth to 5-6, largemouth to 8-9, trout of all sizes....

It's a fisherman's wet dream... pun intended!

Meredith _used_ to have walleye and perch; it is dry! 0% pool. frown

I was just in Michigan for a couple of weeks and had fun with perch, smallies, rock bass, and trout. Have yet to catch a walleye or pike!

Meredith is not dry, it's still around 30 foot according to my co worker who lives on the lake.

This is where I got my information:

But I guess someone living on the lake would trump it!

Do you tell your trout fishermen friends what great bait those trout make for stripers? grin

They all get about 4 inches long. We want TPWD to put the Yellow Perch in some publicly accessable lake in the NT area.

Hey, L, if you are willing to take a bit of a drive, yellow perch are abundant in Colorado. Monsters run 12-14", and honestly pound for pound aren't a great fight. They are, however, wonderful table fare.

When you find them, get as many as you can quickly, or the school will disappear.

A surprisingly large percentage of the lakes that have a population of yellow perch in Colorado were apparently the effect of bucket biology, as the CDOW denies stocking them in those places... Blue Mesa Res is a prime example.

They are very popular with ice fishermen, so if that tickles your fancy, it won't be too long til that deal is in full swing.

This is a typical mess of crappie and yellows from a Colorado lake in August...

Thanks for the tip. Things definitely on my bucket list are going ice fishing for yellow perch, going summer time fishing for yellow perch, going Walleye fishing, and catching a 2 pound Bluegill. Unfortunately, none of those things can be done in hot dry Weatherford.

I mean true perch, not sunfish.

TPWD last stocked yellow perch in 1997, and I wonder if any of the lakes reached sustainable populations.

I wish we had them down here as well. The Yellow Perch that were stocked in Texas years ago were the northern strain of Yellow Perch stocked by the TPWD in a few of the panhandle lakes. It's my understanding that very few still remain in these lakes.

There is a southern strain of Yellow Perch that exist in the Carolina's, Georgia, Alabama, and even in the Chipola River and Dead Lakes of Florida that is more tolerant of warmer waters. Who knows why TPWD hasn't experimented with this strain of Yellow Perch? I know there are plenty of lakes in Texas that are deep enough to provide cooler water for this strain of Yellow Perch to exist, persist, and possibly even thrive through the warmer summer months. These fish might provide a great winter time fishery here in Texas.

If they did ever establish a reproducing population of Yellow Perch in Texas, what would Texans call them? Hmmm? I know, maybe Sunfish? LOl!
