King Salmon or steelhead trout. Fished for both while I lived in AK as a kid and never caught either. Caught 3 of 5 salmon but never a king.

Does anybody know the thing about using your fingers to remember the 5 kinds of Salmon? It's one of the useless trivia things. I remember the ring finger is for steelhead (ring = steel), middle finger is for king (its the biggest), pinky is for pink. Can't remeber the thumb or index.

You had the pinky and middle spot-on and you were on the right track with the ring. Steelhead is actually a trout, not a salmon. It's a sea-run Rainbow. Pinky = Pink (duh!) Thumb = Chum (rhymes) Index = Sockeye (like you're going to poke someone in the eye) Middle = Chinook, or the King salmon (it's the biggest finger and the Chinook is the King) Ring = Coho, or the Silver salmon (Rings are usually silver in color and the Coho has silvery scales)

I got mine on a black and yellow Panther Martin in a tributary of the Snake river in NE Idaho... when I was 12 years old. I still remember the day like it was yesterday. It went 10lb 3 oz and may have been the best tasting Rainbow I will ever eat! I wish my folks would have mounted it for me, but with a bunch of 8's and a few 9's under my belt by that time as well, I guess that wasn't much of a big deal. Man, how I miss the river/stream trout fishing!

A SAL largemouth. One day.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.
