I'm convinced someone with a good video camera could win the $10,000 first prize on funniest home videos if they spent 1 afternoon at any public boat ramp watching idiots try to load their boats. From getting out chest deep in the water to line up a boat on a perfectly good drive on trailer to dragging the skeg across the concrete, sometimes with the motor still running or just tying up the boat ramp to take things out of the boat while others are in line for the ramp. The one we saw this weekend was trying to unload his boat by backing it in and trying to push it while chest deep in the water, over the fenders with the front of the boat still tied up, he had OU stickers on his shirt and everything he owned, I'm just sayin.

I saw a guy with a big sawem off sticker on his boat with a matching one on his big maroon truck along with other A&M stickers leaving the TPWD ramp at Port Aransas. He headed across the street to the convenience store to fill up his boat. Unfortunately for him, he and his crew had neglected to lower their antenna and remove the five rods from the t-top rocket launchers. The sounds of snapping graphite and fiberglass could be heard across the street as they pulled under the apron covering the gas pumps. I flashed him a hookem horns as I drove by.I couldnt help myself.

For quality entertainment go to Braunig or Calaveras are especially good.

Everyone was a rookie once, think back, I know a film of me years ago would be funny too.

I dont know if I looked like a rookie but I'm quite sure I looked like an idiot at the boat ramp yesterday. Backed into the water and went to fire the boat up...nothing. Left the key on last night while checking to see how much gas I had in the tank. Pulled out and swapped batteries. Pulled back in, fired the boat, backed off of the trailer, and the boat dies. Cant use tm to get to the dock because that battery is on the big motor now. Finally get over to the dock and still cant get it to fire. Ended up having to walk it on the trailer. Thirty minutes later I finally get out of the water. I guess today was my day to be "That guy". Some days nothing goes right. Remember that before you make to much fun of somebody.

There for a second I thought this post was going to be about me; especially after seeing the location of "Tyler, TX"! Hehehe. Even though the thread ended up not being about me, I will still share my comedy from the weekend. I'm a relatively new boater and just moved to the area so I was NOT prepared for the steeper-than-I'm-used-to ramp at The Villages Marina. Naturally, I launched just fine. However, trailering back up after we were done was where the comedy started. I had my partner back the truck down to what I was used to, which is the rear truck tires right on the water line. I normally just motor the boat right up to where it needs to be when I have the trailer backed down to this point. I proceeded to pull the boat up and couldn't figure out for the life of me why the front bow loop and the bumper in front of the bow strap winch were not aligning where they should be. My partner, just as inexperienced as I am, couldn't tell what was going on and just kept shrugging his shoulders. I backed the boat up and ran it forward at least a half dozen times. I couldn't figure it out! I finally had the partner toss me the bow strap so that I could just hook it up and hop out. Well, I hooked it up, got out of the boat, and my partner started winching up the boat. To our amazement, the boat was SIDEWAYS (from the wind) before he could finish winching it up. We released the strap a little, pushed the boat back over the trailer and tried again... with the same results. I thought for sure that I had somehow knocked my side bunks off and that's why it wasn't sitting right. As a result, I emptied my pockets and waded out chest deep in order to keep the boat aligned while my partner eased up the ramp. It never occured to me that all of this trouble trailering the boat was due to the steepness of the ramp... until I was chest-deep in water and still not even to the console of the boat. DOH!!!! Lesson learned.

I looked like the idiot too on last thurs. Kids had got in boat and had turned on radio and left it on at some point. Backed the boat in water on thursday pm and nothing. Pulled out and switched to a different battery that did crank it but barely so didn't want to get stranded so just headed back to house and charged them all. All this while 2 ramps were being used to move heavy equipment off lake palestine at the dam and there was a bass tournament starting so I'm sure I got cussed by about 3 different guys waiting to launch. No problems friday morning at 5:00 though.

Everybody goes through the learning curve. I saw some guy with jet ski's drive straight down the boat ramp. He was pissed and surprised there wasn't a turnaround at the water. I told him that big circle thing at the top was the turn around. He said they don't expect a person to back that far do they. I laughed and noddedd my head and pulled a way. Took the guy a long time to back that little trailer up the ramp.

the first time I launched the boat was when I was 16. my dad decided to let me back the truck in while he sat in the boat. The ramp we were on had a bit of an odd angle that causes you to really have to work to get the boat off the trailer or you have to back the truck WAY into the water. So... my dad's solution was to tell me to back up, get straight, pull forward, back up again fast and slam on the breaks.
In his haste to tell me all the stuff I shouldn't forget when doing this he forgot to take his boat keys off the truck key ring. So, I back up, slam on the brakes and he shoots off the trailer, his motor is barely in the water and he immediately notices he has no keys. As he's floating away he's yelling at me to stop and come catch a rope to pull him over to the dock. I on the other hand am completely oblivious and parking the truck which takes me a good 10 minutes because I've never moved a trailer before and there weren't any good pull through spots.
He managed to stop the boat by tossing in his anchor and when I walk up to the dock he's yelling across the lake that he needs me to get the oar out of his truck and throw it as far as I can to him, then he'll swim out to it and use it to paddle the boat back.
I, being the uneducated amateur ask him if his trolling motor requires a key. He stares at me for about 10 seconds, puts the trolling motor in the water and putts on over to the dock, snatches the keys out of my hand and tells me to sit down and not to say a word.
years later I'm putting a boat in by myself for the first time. There's a girl there and I'm gonna take her out on the lake for some recreational activity. I assure her I know what I'm doing.
I back the boat up, one shot, perfectly in line and straight. Walk out to the boat and carry her over the water so she doesn't get wet and put her in the boat. Disconnect the last strap and climb in the boat to pull it off the trailer. I'm hearing an odd sound but not sure what it is, turn on the motor and back up, boats off. Run it over to the courtesy dock to tie off whiel I go park the truck. Park the truck and come back and she's staring wide eyed at the back of the boat that's almost under water now because I forgot the stupid plug. So I run back, put the truck back in the water, run as fast as I can back to the boat which is now moments from tipping nose up, make her go lay on the front of the boat to counter it a bit (only a bit, she was tiny) and I gun it for the trailer. Luckily I got it on the trailer without scraping or scrubbing. The next part I'm pretty ashamed to admit but when she asked what was wrong I told her there must be some damage to the boat that happened last time we pulled it out and took her and the boat home, when my dad asked how it went I handed him the keys and told him to sit down and not say a word.

Yesterday I went to Grapevine Lake in order to watch a friend of mine go carp fishing. We were next to two boat ramps. It was constant entertainment as people were fighting the wind trying to take their boats out. Several got chest deep in order to push boats around. Two guys got into a shouting match that came close to blows. One of the guys showered the other with the prop. It was non stop mayham.

Best one is where they unhook the boat and back in fast and it floats away. Seen that done by veterns and rookies.

That is one of my pet peeves right there. When are you planning on hitting Buchanan?
