So the word is, Academy is having a combo riot starting tomorrow.
Timing couldn't be better, since I was needing to get some low cost gear for a trip to Galveston in a couple weeks. We are renting a house that the back deck sits right on the water in a cove that feeds into the canals.
What I want to know is what would be a good combo for fishing off the deck? If it can pull double duty and be used on the beach, even better. If not, I'd probably grab something for the beach if it isn't too much. Any combo suggestions for surf fishing from the beach?
Also, what type of line should I get? I'm guessing I would need to re-spool it since I doubt the line that comes on the combos isn't ideal.

Longer the rod the better for the surf. Bay fish just use what ever you fresh water fish with bass, striper, sandbass and catcfish.

Thanks.
I usually use braid for everything. Any reason to not use braid in the bay?

I usually use braid for everything. Any reason to not use braid in the bay? I use braid pretty much 100% both salt & freshwater. I just like the strength, no-stretch, thin diameter of it. You never know what is stalking your lure. Two things that I always do on every saltwater trip: 1. If you land any toothy fish (sharks, specks, etc.) or at least get bites, check your line by the lure or bait. Its extremely rare, but the teeth can damage it thus risking breakage on the next fight or hookset. If you see any hard abrasion (or feel with your fingers), cut it and re-tie it (it will only take a few secs). 2. At the end of the day, rinse out your reel & spool with clean tap water. If you were wade fishing, take out one of the main components in the reel, rinse out everything, and re-lube it. (Grease the Gears, Oil the Bearings).

One more thing,
At this time of the year, I rather be fishing in the early morning (starting just before sunrise) or later evening (as the sun is setting).

Since this is a big family vacation with all the kiddos, I'm guessing there won't be much if any fishing on the beach. But I definitely plan to fish every night off the back patio/deck. I've seen people recommend rinsing the line and spool before. Do you just run the whole thing under the sink, or do you need to run the line out and get the water down to the spool?

Run it under the sink if possible. Also, as a quick fix after a morning trip, I will sometimes just stand my rods/reels up in the shower and turn it on and let it run on them for 10 minutes or so. If you have an outside water hose, that works too.

Oh, as far as fishing off the canal goes, you're probably only going to be catching smaller fish like trout (lights at night), maybe reds, possibly flounder, croaker, hardheads (if using dead bait on bottom), etc.. Any of your basic freshwater tackle will work fine there.

Set them line out in the surf while the kids play.

Last summer we did the same thing. I hit the beach wade fishing before anyone woke up. I would catch all the reds and specks I wanted by the time the kids were even out of bed. Spent the rest of the day playing. Just get out there before sun rises and find the bait fish running in the surf. Cast some Gulp shrimp into the feeding fish and hang on. It doesn't last long, but you can limit out in 30 min. Medium to light rod and reel work great for this. 12lb test.

If you have lights, dont fish in the light fish around it. Goin directly through can scare the mullet schools.

So we just got back today. All I can say is I'm ready to go back already. We stayed in house that was on the main cove at Terramar Beach. This was my preferred spot in the house... and here's the view I had for 7 days... We got there last Friday and the first thing I did after getting unpacked was check out the dock. Just about everything that I had bought specifically for the trip was already there for me to use (bait keepers, rod holders, perch traps, and a lot more). I'd never used a cast net before, so that took a little while to get down. After casting in the hot sun for two days, I finally figured out I could catch all the shrimp and perch I needed by noon in the shade of the boat launch. During the day, we'd sit on the dock, under the boat launch and just fish off the bottom. Caught countless perch and catfish, and even caught two sea robins (crazy looking fish). Took several nights to get the pattern down pat for evening and night fishing, but once I had it, it was a blast. The dock had four green underwater lights that would hold spotted sea trout just as it got dark. Then the catfish would move in and there had to be 20 catfish for every trout. Again, it was a few nights before I figured out that when the catfish moved in, the trout would move to another light, but the big trout were still in the mass and would drive off the catfish when they came up. Got to a point where I would catch at least 5-6 over 15" each night. On the last night, I decided to call it a night early to spend with the kids, and made one last cast. That cast paid off with a close to 22" trout that weighed 3lbs 2oz. I'm sure if I had pinched the tail, it would have measured 22", but I didn't have a third hand or someone else to take the picture. Caught him with live shrimp. Finally, here's my fishing buddy...
