i saw this little guy wandering around on the bank and went over to check him out. had to show DAM. flipped him over and he was missing a leg. i was thinking "awwww - a baby turtle...how cute..." then he bucked up - out came the head and a cute little baby "snap" - that nixed the idea of a pet turtle. he was safely released into the brush, where a hundred feral cats like to patrol. You can only take/collect reptiles or amphibians on private property where you have secured landowner permission, taking or collecting them on public lands is prohibited.

I don't hook any in the mouth anymore now that I use 7/0+ hooks. They still get the bait tho.

FISHER77 you are correct that is the best way, or simply snap hook off and pull barb through and let fall in water

I just called myself to verify with myself that it was ok to take/collect these critters off of myself's land if i want. myself said it was totally cool and do whatever. love those voices in my head.

Addressing the original question... You will harm the turtle less by leaving the hook inside of its throat. It will either rust out or the flesh around where the hook is stuck will fester and push it out. I do not kill soft shells (in public water) unless they are going to be cooked. I have released several with hooks still in their mouth or throat. I do not know if they made it or not, but they have a better chance that way than with their heads cut off.
