Pair of long handled pliers, is what I have used to get it out of the mouth. Never hooked one in the esophagus. Just hold it by the shell, and work the hook out. Guess you could try some needle nosed pliers to try and get it out of the esophagus. If you cant get it out, youll have to cut the line, and let it rust out.

I use circle hooks all the time when catfishing. They set themselves for the most part. Let the fish take the bait, then give it a vey light sweeping motion with the rod, just to apply pressure to the hook. You will get the hang of it. Good luck.

I have needle nosed pliers but when i tired to take out the hook, he snapped at my finger causing me alot of pain... How long are those long handled pliers?

They also squirm alot. Its hard to get the hook out even withi 2 people doing working.

Ae there ceretain circles that are better than others? I have some eagle claw sea circles in 1/0 size. They arent working for me. What did yo mean by sweeping motion

Use a 6/0-8/0 Gamakatsu octopus circle hook to start. If you catch a turtle do your best to unhook it. If that's not an option relieve it of it's head. Get your hook and move on. Pay attention to your line. It sucks to kill one if you're not into keeping them to eat but such is life, or death in this situation. I've caught a few before that I couldn't get the hook out. If it was in a place that I didn't think the turtle could get over with the hook left in place I knifed it. I'd rather dispatch it quickly than leave the hook in it to cause it pain or a slow starving death. Just my feelings on the matter. Good luck.

I usually just pull the line until there head stretches out, grab their necks and cut their heads off. Just softshells though. Cut the line on the others.

They are about 10 inches long. Let that turtle dangle on the line till the neck is fully extended, then grab the hook with the pliers, and let it hang from the hook. Then hold the turtle over the water, and twist the hook out. You may have to shake it a bit to get the barb out, but you wont hurt the turtle. When the hook comes out, the turtle falls in the lake, and the deed is done.

Gamakatsu Circle Sea hooks.

When the fish has the bait, have the rod in front of you. Then gently sweep it to the side.

i saw this little guy wandering around on the bank and went over to check him out. had to show DAM. flipped him over and he was missing a leg. i was thinking "awwww - a baby turtle...how cute..." then he bucked up - out came the head and a cute little baby "snap" - that nixed the idea of a pet turtle.

he was safely released into the brush, where a hundred feral cats like to patrol.

Some incidentals will occur even with taking the best of precautions, but catching catfish any size, you will injure them and other species of fish, whether you take and eat them or release them...there will be some evidence of a hook set. You did mention the turtle snapped fingers and it hurt, so does a hook set in fish, they do have nervous system.

Soft-shells and Common snapping turtles are the best eating of all species (alligator snapping turtles are protected in Texas), but you will require a hunting license in order to retain turtles.

Guess you do not hunt do you?
